John Fugate
- (John's ancestry is yet unproven as of April 2005) (Castlewoods John was not a son of Josiah and Mary Martin. I believe but cannot prove he was a son of John Fugate, the older brother of Josiah.)

John Fugate and Sarah(McCarty) Fugate lived in Shenandoah Co, VA, left there about 1772 for Washington Co, VA. They finally settled in what is now Russell-near Castlewood Co, VA.John died there before August 1824.
John is NOT the son of Josias &Mary(Martin) Fugate. Sarah's maiden name is unproven,but McCarty is quite possible.

Abstract of the disposition of John Fugitt, Castle’s Wood, Russell Co., VA, home of John Smith, ESQ: "(John said) that he moved to this country in the year seven hundred & seventy-one. ...it was said by the old settlers in this place that if Francis Cooper had not sold his place to John Morgan he might now have had it to live on himself. This deponent also sayeth that some time in the year (1772) in or about September to the best of his remembrance Francis Fugate applied to him to purchase the land of William Karr that lay on Moccasin Creek that is now in dispute between the aforesaid parties & accordingly he purchased the land for fifty shillings from William Karr for Francis Fugate. This deponent also sayeth that said Morgan told him that he had sold said land to William Karr… Signed John Fugitt."

Said sale was made the 16th day of August 1824: One bay horse$46.50; One bar shear $1.00; One large pot $4.00; One kettle $3.50; One small pot $1.00; One small kettle $1.00; One loom $2.50; One good barrel $2.00; One axe $1.50; One draw knife $.50; One bottle $.50; One Iron wedge $.50; One old cask $.62. 21 Nov 1833: John's heirs sold the land at Castle Run. The deeds have the names of the children as parties to the sale: “Grantors: John Fugit of Decatur County, Indiana; Jonathan Fugit of Perry County, Kentucky, Jesse Fugit of Jefferson County, Indiana, Benjamin Fugit and Lydia Fugit of Lawrence Co., Kentucky, Moses Fugit of Bedford County. Tennessee, William Bolin, husband of Sarah Fugit, of Cape Girard County, Missouri; Benjamin George, husband of Martha Fugit, of Franklin County, Indiana. William Holbrook, intermarried with Delilah Fugit, heir of Hannah Fugit of Lawrence Co, Kentucky, being hairs of John Fugit of Russell County, deceased.” (Russell County Deed Books 9, p. 380 and 10, p 52) Note: Since (John) did not leave a will, his land would have been inherited equally by all his children.
