Mrs. Catherine Cleland, for nearly sixty years a highly respected resident of this community, died at her home here on Monday morning, Jan. 22. Although in failing health for several months Mrs. Cleland was confined to her bed only three weeks. Catherine Orr, was born in New York state Dec. 17, 1837. Her parents returned to Canada and then she grew to womanhood and was married at Edwardsburg[h] on Aug. 22, 1855, to William T. Cleland. In 1866 they came to Minnesota and for a number of years lived on part of what is now called the William Rose farm, later moving to Dundas, where Mr. Cleland died Mar 12, 1910 [sic]. Twelve children were born to them three of whom died in infancy. One daughter, Anna, wife of M. L. Gallagher died Sept. 5, 1918. The surviving children are Frank Cleland of Danbury, Wis.; Mrs. Alma Emery of Conjuring Creek, Can.; Mrs. Mary Dixon of Fort Ripley; John Cleland, Mrs. Amanda Manuel of Danbury, Harvey Cleland of Dundas; Mrs. Jessie Clark of Eden Prairie and Mrs. Rena Suning [sic] of Crystal City, Manitoba, Can., all of whom except one son were with their mother at her death. Mrs. Cleland is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Alice Davenport of Dennison, and three brother, Henry Orr of Faribault, John Orr of Dundas and Leslie Orr of Hughson, Cal. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the home. Burial was in Groveland cemetery, Rev. Guy Menefee of Faribault conducting the service.
