vi. Charity Teague*, born Dec 14, 1722, in Cecil, Maryland; died Abt. 1799 in Surry, North Carolina.

Family

“The Swaim Family of Indiana and Oklahoma.” by Jack S. Swaim. Page 127

John Swaim, born 1719, was the third known son of Willem Swaim (1677) and Maria Larzelere. John was baptized October 18, 1719 in the Dutch Reformed Church, Staten Island, New York and was likely born within a few months before that date. John Swaim married Charity Teague in 1744. Charity Teague was born on Staten Island in 1722. Charity was a daughter of William Abel Teague (b 25 Aug 1695, d 26 May 1762) and Isabella Loftin (b 19 Dec 1693, d 1762) from Cecil County, Maryland. William Teague was a son of Edward Teague (b 1655, d 1697) and Susan (unknown).

Edward Teague emigrated in 1675 from Bristol, England to Cecil County, Maryland on the ship Thomas Jones. Edward acquired 290 acres in Maryland which he named Teague’s Delight. Edward’s son sold his father’s land in 1714 at age 21. William then migrated to Frederick County, Virginia in 1737 and on to North Carolina in 1752. Isabella Loftin was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Innes Loftin. Isabella has also at times been associated with the surname ‘Pennington’. 774

John Swaim acquired 325 acres in Frederick County, Virginia, on April 9, 1750.775 John’s brother Michael was one of the chain carriers. John’s land there adjoined property owned by William Teague, John’s wife Charity’s father.

John Swaim sold this property August 19, 1751 to Benjamin Sebastian of Fairfax County. William Teague sold his last piece of property to a son in October, 1751. Therefore, it is believed that John migrated to Rowan County, North Carolina in 1751-1752 …

John Swaim’s will does not mention his wife, Charity, which indicates that she must have recently passed away since she is present in the 1800 census. In his will, John left his land on Fox Knobb near waters of Deep Creek and six head of cattle to his oldest son, William. This property adjoined land owned by Frederick Miller, Michael Swaim and Jordan Mannering and did not include 70 acres already given to his son-in-law Thomas Turner (husband of daughter Charity). The will does not reference other children besides William. Based on the 1801 will it is likely that John Swaim (1719) died in Stokes County, North Carolina, possibly in the home he willed to his son William on Fox Knobb. 779

Children of JOHN SWAIM and CHARITY TEAGUE are:

  • i. WILLIAM4 SWAIM, b. 1745, or 1746, Frederick County, Virginia; d. 1811; m. ANNA NANCY ROBBINS29, April 27, 1765, (Bond), Rowan County, NC; b. Abt. 174729; d. 18232
  • 50. ii. CHARITY SWAIM, b. Abt. 1737. Charity Swaim (b 1747, d 1823). [<John<Willem<Thys] Charity Swaim was born in Virginia. Charity married Thomas Turner794 (b 28 Aug 1732, d Oct 1808). Thomas Turner was born in Pennsylavania and was a son of Roger Turner (b 1689, d Dec 1778) and Elizabeth Evans (b 1693, d 1782). Roger and Elizabeth were born in Frederick County, Virginia. Thomas Turner first married Mary Lindsey (b ~1742, d 1768).
  • 51. iii. RACHEL SWAIM, b. Abt. 1752. Rachel Bess Swaim (b ~1752798, d 1809-1814). [<John<Willem<Thys] Rachel was born in North Carolina. Rachel was married 15 Feb 1769799(bond) to Abraham Enyart (b ~1748, d 13 Apr 1809). Abraham was born in Kentucky and was a son of Silas Enyart (b 1709-1712, d 1758) although some researchers have suggested it was his brother David Enyart.
  • iv. ELIZABETH SWAIM, m. ABRAHAM TRANSEAU. 6. Elizabeth Swaim married Abraham Transeau808. [<John<Willem<Thys] Other researchers have included Elizabeth and a marriage to an “Abraham Transeau (or Transou)” but I have been unable to find any supporting evidence
  • 52. v. SOLOMON D. SWAIM, b. Abt. 1754, or 1755. Solomon David Swaim (b ~1754805, d ~1834). [<John<Willem<Thys] Solomon was born in North Carolina. It has been said Solomon’s middle name was David although I have also seen Davis shown. It gets confusing because there are several Solomons in various branches and some of them were born around the same time. “Solomon Davis” probably applies to a son of Solomon’s brother Michael Swaim (b 1761) who married Elizabeth Grace Davis. So, in this case, Solomon D. Swaim (b ~1754), son of John and Charity, might have been named ‘Solomon David’ after King Solomon, son of King David in the Bible. Solomon married Esther Annabella Charity Teague (b ~1758, d 1777). Esther was a daughter of Benjamin Teague (b 1739, d 1829) and Charity (unknown) (b 1740, d 1762) from Virginia. Benjamin Teague was a son of William Abel Teague and Isabella Elizabeth Loftin.
  • 53. vi. JOHN SWAIM, b. Abt. 1757, Based on 1790 Census calculations or 1758, Rowan County, NC; d. Aft. 1830, Wilkes County, NC. 3. John Swaim (b 26 Apr 1748, d 16 Jan 1827). [<John<Willem<Thys] John Swaim married Elizabeth Vickrey70 (sister of Charity Vickrey previously described who married John’s brother William Swaim). [Details on John and Elizabeth Swaim and their children are described in the previous chapter on John Swaim (1748). I am listing John (1748) as a son of John (1719) which seems more likely.]
  • 54. vii. MOSES SWAIM, b. Abt. 1755, Based on 1790 Census calculations. 7. Moses Swaim (b ~1759809, d Jul 1836). [<John<Willem<Thys] Moses married Anna Catharina Hein71 (b 29 Mar 1763, d 17 Jan 1823). Anna was born in Pennsylvania and was the daughter of Johann Jacob Hein II (b 13 Sep 1713, d 26 Sep 1795) and Anna Catharina Schober (b 1719, d Nov 1749). Johann Hein and Anna Schober were born in Dillenburg, Germany. The family story says Moses and Anna eloped. I have little information about Moses’ early life. They produced nine children. Anna Hein died in 1823. 810 Moses then married Elizabeth Lachenauer72 on 18 May 1825 (bond) in Stokes County, North Carolina. Moses sold his North Carolina property on 9 Nov 1826 and sometime after that moved to Paint Rock Valley (Jackson County), Alabama. Moses died in 1836 and is buried in the Swaim family cemetery at Estillfork, Alabama. 811
  • 55. viii. MICHAEL SWAIM, b. Abt. 1760, Based on 1790 Census calculations . 8. Michael Swaim (b 27 Feb 1761, d 28 Sep 1838817). [<John<Willem<Thys] Michael Swaim married Sarah Charity Teague (b 1762, 1790). Sarah was a daughter of Benjamin Teague (b 1739, d 1829) and Charity (unknown) (b 1740, d 1762) from Virginia.

Notes

The Swaim Family of Indiana and Oklahoma.” by Jack S. Swaim. Page 120:

The Teague family history site (http://www.fmoran.com/swaim.html) includes the following explanation:

“Some versions of this family (John Swaim, born ~1719, and Charity Teague Swaim) include a son John Swaim (1748- 1827), who married Elizabeth Vickery in 1767 and lived in Randolph Co. NC. Other histories say that this John is the son of Michael Swaim, brother of John Swaim, Sr. We have included John and Elizabeth Vickery Swaim's children in the next generation because a few of their descendants show up in Forsyth County.”

Family information passed down from Sarah Florence Swaim related information from her grandmother Elizabeth as told by Rebecca Swaim. This family information lists all of Michael’s children and there is no son named John. I think this is a significant piece of evidence suggesting that Michael Swaim (1715) certainly was not the father of John Swaim (1748).
