Tract on the western side of Sharrando [Shenandoah] River, part of 40,000 acres purchased of Jost Hite from Isaac and John Van Matre ... south side of Cohougoluta River the upper end of an island ... against William Shepherd's plantation ... above the waggon road ford ... north side of the Wagon Road. • He owned property on 3 May 1742 in Orange County, Virginia Colony. 1457 Isaac Garrison had land surveyed on 4 Apr 1734, 200 acres "situate on the western side on Cohongolooto (Potomac) River" beginning at Samuel Taylor's upper line following the river crossing the Waggon Road (later called the Packhorse Ford/Philadelphia Road) and then 20 poles 330 feet to his westernmost line (Brooke, Robert, Book of Surveys), 1.4 miles east of the present-day West Virginia Highway 480 bridge across the Potomac River at Shepherdstown (Tract 16, Map 3). He received a patent from the Colony on this land on 3 Oct 1734 (Virginia Land Patent Book 15, p335). Garrison sold the 200-acre patent land to Moses Teague on 3 May 1742. Moses then sold 100 acres on the east end by Knotts Island to Edward Teague (probably his son or brother) on 26 May 1742 (Orange Co VA Deed Book 5, p154). Edward sold the 100 acres to Richard Mercer on 3 Sept 1747 (Frederick Co VA Deed Book 1, p331).

• 3 May 1742, Orange County, Virginia Colony. 1458 Three roads in Virginia led to "Packhorse Ford," then across the Potomac River into Maryland and points east and north: the "Philadelphia Waggon Road," "Sheppardstown to Warm Springs Road" and the combination of "Jost Hite's Road" with the "Teague's Ferry to Kersey Ferry Road". The Packhorse Ford was located on Isaac Garrison's "200-acre 4 April 1734 Survey Land", 20 poles/330 feet east (down river) from Garrison, west (up river) corner at the Potomac. (Tract 16, Map 3). Garrison sold the 200-acre tract on 3 May 1742 to Moses Teague who operated a ferry across the Potomac River near Packhorse Ford (Orange Co VA Deed Book 5, p154).

• He owned property on 26 May 1742 in Orange County, Virginia Colony. On 26-27 May 1742, Moses Teague of Orange Co, VA to Edward Teague of same. Lease and release. For 5 shillings. Tract on the western side of Sharendo River being part of 40,000 acres purchased of Jost Hite from Isaac and John Vanmater ... south side Cohougotut River, the upper end of an island ... up the river. (Orange Co, VA, Deed Book 5, pp191-4)

• 26 Nov 1742, Orange County, Virginia Colony. 1459 Moses Teague owned the land and operated the ferry across the Potomac River when the Orange County Court ordered a road viewed from Teague's Ferry to the head of Bullskin Run and then to Kersey's Ferry on the Shenandoah River at Ashby's Gap on 26 Nov 1742 (Orange Co VA Court Book 3, p298). As described in Joseph Chapline's will (written 27 Jan 1768), "Teague's Old Wagon Road" (Philadelphia Road) turned east after crossing the Potomac River, turned north at present-day Miller's Saw Mill Road and then joined Harper's Ferry Road, being on the west side of Antietam Creek and Sharpesburg (Frederick Co MD Will Book A, p332). ( Upstream from Harpers Ferry there were at least two ferries by the mid-1760s. Moses Teague operated a ferry on the Potomac that carried settlers near where present-day Knott Road (SSR 31/2) reaches the Potomac shore just downstream from Knott Island.)

• Appearance in Document: 7 Aug 1752, Frederick County, Virginia, United States. 1460 William Loftin [Moses' brother-in-law] to Moses Teague, Power of Attorney. William Loftin, of Frederick Co VA, names Moses Teague of the same county his lawful attorney in order to recover one tract or parcel of land [not named] lying on the Bay of Chesapeake in Baltimore County Maryland, "the same to me belonging." (Frederick Co, VA, Deed Book 2, p525)

• He owned property on 28 Sep 1752 in Orange County, Virginia Colony. 1452 Moses made a warrant on 28 Sep 1752 for 100 acres "on Potomack adjacent land whereon he lives" (Garrison's patent land) which was surveyed on 24 Nov 1752 but a grant was not issued until 24 Feb 1761 (Joyner, Northern Neck Warrants and Surveys, p155; Gray, Northern Neck Grants, K-233).

• Appearance in Document: 30 Jan 1756, Frederick County, Virginia, United States. 1452 William Lofton of Frederick Co, VA, appointed Moses Teague to hold his power of attorney for the purpose of disposing of a tract of land lying on the Chesapeake in Baltimore Co, MD. Moses was a witness to a deed in Frederick Co, VA on 30 Jan 1756 (Frederick Co, VA, Deed Book 4, p101).

• He had a residence circa 1762 in Orange County, North Carolina, United States. 1461 After selling his land in Rowan Co to his brother Joshua, Moses Teague moved to Orange Co NC, a part of which is now Chatham Co, and lived near the Rocky Creek Baptist Church.

• Cir 1762, Orange County, North Carolina, United States. [This is an important point in the Teague mystery. It appears that Moses was well established in Rowan County, but between 1762 and 1763 he sells his land in Rowan, then appears in Orange Co. Moses dies there. Moses's brother Edward and probably William are also in Orange Co.]

• He owned property on 7 Aug 1764 in Frederick County, Virginia, United States. 1452 After appointing Thomas Swearingen his "Attorney in Fact to Moses Teague late" of Frederick County, Virginia, Swearingen sold the 100-acre Northern Neck grant land and the 100-acre Garrison patent land to Joseph Barnes on 7 Aug 1764, bringing Moses' land holdings to an end (Frederick Co VA Deed Book 9, pp293, 297).

• 1768. 1462 As drawn on his 250-acre 3 Apr 1734 survey, Samuel Taylor's Ferry Road was located on the Potomac River approximately one-third mile south (down river) of Knotts Island. (Tract 15, Map 3). On the Maryland side of the Potomac in present-day Washington County, the Ferry Road approximated Limekiln Road north to Antietam, Maryland, then Harper's Ferry Road to Sharpsburg, Maryland and then onto the Philadelphia Wagon Road. On the Virginia (West Virginia) side of the Potomac, the Ferry Road ran southwest from the ferry crossing on or near present-day Jefferson County Highway 31/2 to Moler Crossroads, then along Highway 31 for a short distance, leaving Highway 31 and continuing on to Samuel Taylor's 125-acre 6 Apr 1734 survey ("where Taylor lived") where the road was located on the south side of Rattlesnake Run about 1 1/2 miles from the Potomac River. A "Waggon Road" also crossed the 125-acre 1734 survey land from a northeasterly to southwesterly direction. (Tract 18, Map 3). These two roads merged into one road southwest of the 125-acre tract. After merging, the road was referred to as "Jost Hite's Waggon Road". This road crossed the Potomac River at Packhorse Ford and proceeded south from the river on or along the east side of the Trough Road/Jefferson County Highway 31/1. About one mile south of the Potomac, the road ran west of and near the southwest corner of William Forrester's 200-acre survey of 1750. The road continued south for one-fourth mile where it was recorded as being near an "Old Waggon Road" on Joseph Chapline's 635-acre survey. At Chaplin's, the road was about one-third mile east of Jefferson County Highway 31/1 (Trough Road) at the 90 degree turn west. The Wagon Road proceeded sourth from this point and crossed Rattlesnake Run at Taylor's 125-acre tract. On the north side of the Potomac in present-day Washington County, MD, the Packhorse Ford road was referred to as "Teagg's (Teague's) Old Waggon Road" in 1768 (Frederick Co MD Will Book A-1, p332, Joseph Chaplin's will). The road from the ford was Canal Road southeast along the river to Millers Sawmill Road, then north to Harper's Ferry Road and then to Sharpsburg, MD.

• Appearance in Document: 4 Apr 1768. 1461 At a meeting of the Regulators, it was decided to hold a general meeting on the first Monday of July, October, January, and April at a meeting house near Moses Teague.

"... to my loving wife Rachel Teague one feather bed and furniture and all the pewter there is. One pot, one of the wheels and big wheel, two cows and calves, one horse, saddle and bridle, which horse she should choose, one plow irons and geers, my negro man Abraham as long as she lives, and her third of what shall remain of my estate. ... to my son David Teague the land I now live upon and after her death, my negro man Abraham. ... to my children Moses Teague, Elizabeth Wellborn, Abraham Teague, Isaac Teague, Jacob Teague, William Teague, Elizabeth Hinson, Susanah Marly, Hanna Hornidy, David Teague, Charity Ray, the rest of my estate after the aforementioned legacies to my wife Rachel and my son David is taken out, to be equally divided amongst them. [names wife Rachel Teague and son David Teague executors]."

Do make and ordain this my last will and Testament, which is to say first and principally of all I give and recommend my soul to God that gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to burial in decent and Christian manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named, and as touching such earthly? estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with my life I desire and dispose of the same in the manner and form following. Item. I give and bequeath to my loving wife Rachael Teague one feather bed and furniture and all the pewter there is, one pot one little Chest? and one large. I whereby utterly disallow and make void all other Wills or Testaments heretofore made by me proclaiming this and this alone to be my last Will and Testament. Migration of Marylanders to North Carolina and South Carolina Prio to 1800", Henry C Peden, Jr, 1994) [the year 1786 looks wrong, since Moses is disposing of his land in Virginia in 1756 and is buying land in NC that same year. Probably should be 1756 instead.]

• Moses Teague (ca. 1718-ca.1799) was born in Cecil Co., MD, and died in Chatham Co., NC. He married Elizabeth Loftin ca.1738. He has been cited by the D.A.R as offering patriotic service during the Revolutionary War. That including furnishing supplies to the army in North Carolina. President Obama’s line of descent is through daughter Mary Isabel Teague who married James Wellborn (see below) of Maryland in Frederick Co., VA; they settled in Kentucky.

• Moses Teague Sr, son of William and Isabella, b ca 1718 in Cecil County MD, d 1799. He left a will dated 31 Mar 1786 in Chatham Co NC. He was a Revolutionary War soldier. He married first Elizabeth Loften, a daughter of Thomas and Eleanor Loften, according to the will of Thomas Loften dated 5 Sept 1751. He married second Rachel Taylor, a daughter of Samuel and Rachel Taylor, according to the will of Samuel Taylor dated 2 Nov 1780.
