Charles was mayor of Cradock in 1941 and 1944
- Updated from FamilySearch Family Tree via son Joseph Charles Butler by SmartCopy: Jul 21 2015, 12:23:15 UTC
Born in England 11 January 1864, died in Uitenhage 7 January 1949, buried in Cradock.
Married Emma Collett. They had 5 children: Harold, Alfred Douglas, Grace, Joseph and Dorothy.
Charles Butler was a deeply religious, energetic, public spirited man. He came to Cradock, South Africa, in 1887. Moved to Vryburg in 1908 and established the Northern Newspaper Co., and was the editor of "The Northern News". While in Vryburg he served on many public bodies, including being Secretary of the "Bechuanaland Agricultural Society" and the "Vryburg Farmers Association".
Through sheer perseverance he was largely responsible for Sir Arnold Theiler being sent to Vryburg to investigate the cause od Botulisim (Galamsiekte) among cattle. The solution to this terrible problem turned the Norther Cape into a thirving cattle ranching area.
Two of his many wise saying which bore out his outlook on life were, "No is no answer if you have a good case" and as a printer all his life, "Make note if it"
