About Charles Goldsmith

Date and place of birth from family bible quoted in 'The early haunts of Oliver Goldsmith' by J.J. Kelly. Date of birth from 'The life of Oliver Goldsmith' by James Prior, who also says he went to Jamaica, revisited England in 1791 and brought his family there in 1795/6; and that he had two daughters as well as Henry and Oliver.

Date of death from 'The Autobiography of Oliver Goldsmith' [the Canadian poet].

It is possible that Charles had a son John as well: "Maurice Goldsmith no doubt told his relatives of the pecuniary advantages that were in store for him when the work came out, and appeals for help reached the Bishop from the daughter of Henry Goldsmith, from the widow of Maurice, from Charles Goldsmith, and from a son of Charles named John Goldsmith." This refers to a project for an edition of Oliver Goldsmith's poems for the benefit of the impoverished Maurice, and is quoted from Sir Ernest Clarke, 'The family letters of Oliver Goldsmith; a paper read before the Bibliographical Society, October 15, 1917' (London: Blades, East and Blades, 1920). This is also the source of Charles's place of death, and it further suggests that John and some of Charles's other children may have been natural children or the product of another marriage.

However, Bishop Percy believed that Charles had lived in Dorset Place, off St Pancras, where he had built several houses with a fortune obtained in Jamaica as a cabinet maker - Katherine C. Balderston, 'The history and sources of Percy's memoir of Goldsmith' (Cambridge, U.P., 1926).
