About Charles Hamilton Howery
He was a farmer. He was probably named for his uncle Charles Heidenrich, and perhaps for Hamilton Graham, the husband of his father's cousin Mary. Mary's brother, Lewis Howry, also named a son Hamilton Howry.
He does not seem to have served in the Civil War. There is no record of his service from Wisconsin, and he was only 18 at the end of the war.
He probably moved to Marion County, Iowa with his brother William and sister Josephine. He was enumerated in the household of his sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Charles Hightree, on the 1870 census.
He married Embrozina Wallace in 1875. Their families had lived near each other for a number of years. Both families were in Marion County, Iowa. They appear within a few pages of each other on the 1870 census.
Their marriage record says, "Charles Howery, Dodge Co. Nebr., Age 27 yrs., Born: Wisconsin. Father: James -- Mother: Margaret Hydenridge. - Embrosina Wallace, Dodge Co. Nebr., Age 18 yrs. Born: Wisconsin. Father: Philip -- Mother: Almeda Sherman. Marriage Date: 22 February 1875. Witnesses: Alonzo Harrington, Fremont, Nebr., Ellen Wallace, Fremont, Nebr., By Whom: Wm. C. Ghost, Probate Judge, Where: Fremont, Nebr." (Marriages C:325).
He and his family appear on the 1880 census at Cedar Precint in Saunders County, Nebraska: Charles Howry (39), Embrozina (22), Eldora (3), and Jay James (9 months). Charles erroneously reported that both his parents were born in New York.
The 1890 Nebraska State Gazeteer lists him as a farmer at Creston, Platte County. The same gazeteer also lists an A. B. Howery as a farmer at Leigh in Platte County, probably his brother Alvin.
They appear on the 1900 census at Ramshorn, Stanton County, Nebraska: Charlie Howery (52), Embrosina (42), Dorah (23), James J. (20), Almer P. (18), Albert (16), Alv (11), and Octava (8). He was a farmer, and owned his farm.
At the time of his death in 1918, he was living at 439 W. Jensen in Fremont, Nebraska.
