Charles was the youngest son of Holy Roman Emperor Lothair I and Ermengarde of Tours.Upon his father’s death he inherited the Rhone valley of Burgundy and Provence. He was the first king of Provence, but he died without issue, and Provence was seized by his elder brother, the emperor Louis II. Charles was a child in poor health, suffering from epilepsy in particular
