(interesting to note that George and Maria gave birth to Charles John Green on the 23rd September 1851 - 4 months later and he was not baptised until 30th July 1854, I wonder what was the reason for the baptism of all the children so close to the birth of James (why not just wait until his birth - and then leaving James’ baptism for another nearly3 years!) From Evergreen Memories - page 115.
Three years after the birth of Sarah Hariet Alce, Maria and George Green had their fourth and youngest girl, who they named Charlotte Lydia, after George’s aunt Charlotte Hyndes nee Green and Maria’s sister Lydia Bates. In 1865, when she was 18, Charlotte married John Reid, the son of James and Mary Reid, who had come from Knockadoo County Derry in Northern Ireland. James and Mary and their first child Sarah arrived on the ship “Lord Nelson” in 1840, and her brother John was born in Australia. James became a man of some substance in the Colony and was a member of the Inaugural Council of Willoughby.
Early in their marriage, John was a tobacconist, but later he became a stonemason, he and Charlotte spent all their lives together at Willoughby, in houses in Sydney Street, High Street and Salisbury Rd. They brought up a very large family, many of whose descendants still live in the Willoughby area.
Their youngest son, Milton Reid was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for Bravery during World War I.
Milton lived with mother (and assumed family as he was 22 and single at the time,) at Eaton Street Willoughby NSW on 26 October 1914 from details of son’s enlistment in WWI -he followed his father and brother George and became a stonemason.
In her last years, her mother Maria Green (nee Bates) went to live with Charlotte and John and it was in their home, in Salisbury Rd Willoughby, that she died in 1896.
