About Christina "Teenie" Jane Vincent (Smith)

Penrod Family History
Volume I

Christina Jane Smith Vincent

Christina Jane Smith, better as Teenie Smith, was born the 28th of December 1859, a daughter of James S. Smith and Christina Penrod Smith. She was the eldest of nine children. She spent much of her life at their home by the grist-mill which her father operated. It was located on the mill race and about 12th North, where the Barbizon plant is now built. He also operated a molasses mill which was located below the hill at the northeast corner of the Grandview Church.

She had a happy childhood which included school and church and she would tell about her father fulfilling a mission to England when she was twelve years old. She met and loved Daniel L. Vincent, and they were married the 16th of November 1887. They made their home in a small house in the 3rd Ward; it stood on the corner of 4th West and 5th North. In the years they lived here they had four children; Zella Teenie, who married J. C. Chase; Daniel Earl and James Boyd, who died when infant; and Lynn Alva Vincent.

Her mother was a semi-invalid for many years, unable to do any heavy work; and Teenie was very good to her, giving her nursing care, doing her washing and ironing and cleaning. In 1901, Uncle Jim and Aunt Christina, as they were known, were both ill, so Tennie and her husband moved to their home to care for them until their deaths, which came just two weeks apart in 1902.

The following year the family moved to their farm in what was then known as Fort Field, and lived in a little two room house while they built a new, larger clinker brick home. It was a happy day when Teenie could move into it and have its advantages. This home is located at 2009 West Center Street. Here they had one more child, Vere Latreille.

In addition to regular farming, they had a large apple orchard and grew some very good apples.

She loved to read and would read stories and poems "out loud" to a child or grandchild at her knee. Her grandchildren remember helping her feed the chickens and gathering eggs, and there was always an extra egg with which to run to the store and "spend" for candy. They remember helping her set the table when she cooked for the thrashers. They remember her for her patience and kindness.

She died the 25th of May, at the age of seventy from pneumonia and the asthma that had plagued her so much of her life.
