About Christian Hamilton, Lady Jedburgh

CHRISTIAN HAMILTON Lady Jedburgh

Bogus Genealogy

At least one pedigree published by FamilySearch falsely claims that Christian Hamilton, here treated, and her second husband Robert, Lord Jedburgh, are the parents of Sir Thomas Carr, senior. This is wrong. Robert, Lord Jedburgh, died without issue. This pedigree also claims that she died at Innerwick on 11 October 1703 but this is wrong too. Christiam Hamilton. here treated, died before 24 November 1688, the date upon which Robert, Lord Jedburgh, made his last will and testament and expressed the wish: "to be buried beside my ancestors in the Ile of ffairnihirst nixt to the Greave of my Dear wife".

The Question of Identity

Christian Hamilton is the daughter of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick, The Scots Peerage VI: 12 The Scots Peerage V: 78 but there was more than one Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick and it is not yet clear which was her father. The name of her mother is not known. Stirnet: Hamilton 14

Death and Burial

A date and place of death has not been identified for Christian Hamilton, lady Jedburgh, but it is clear from the last will and testament of her second husband, Robert, Lord Jedburgh, which was made at Ferniehirst on 24 November 1688, that she predeceased him. She probably died at Ferniehirst. She was certainly buried in the Isle of Ferniehirst.
