Death

A date and place of death has not been identified for Ar Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick, here treated. It has been suggested that he and his father may have died on 30 August 1640, in an explosion at Dunglass Castle in East Lothian, in the pre-union Kingdom of Scotland. House of Hamilton: p. 311

Ane band, grantit be the said Sir Alexander Hamilton in favour of Alexander Hamilton his oye, and sone procreate betwixt Sir Alexander Hamilton of Fenton, Knt. and Dame Elizabeth Ker, his spouse, be quilk the said Sir Alexander obliges him to infeft his said oye in his lands of Ballencrief," dated 27th August 1600. 12 July 1608: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland which confirms that the baronies of Innerwick and Ballincreiff, together with various other lands, were granted anew (de novo dedit) to Alexander Hamilton, the eldest grandson of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick. Alexander, the grandson, is identified as the lawful son of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Fenton and his wife Elizabeth Ker. In turn, Alexander Hamilton of Fenton is identified as the eldest lawful son of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick. All of the lands in question had previously been resigned by Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick, who reserved his own liferent interest in parts of the lands in question, and that of Lady Cristine Hamilton, now his wife: "tunc ejus sponse". The lands conveyed were to be held by Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick, during his lifetime, and, thereafter, by Alexander Hamilton, the grandson, and his lawful male heirs; whom failing by the lawful male heirs of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Fenton and his wife Elizabeth Ker; whom failing by James Hamilton, the eldest lawful son of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick and his wife Cristine Hamilton; whom failing by any of the male heirs whatsoever of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick. 26 February 1625: Petition by Sir Alexander Hamilton, apparent of Innerweeke, bearing that Robert, Earl of Nithsdale, had made choice of him as one of the captains of his regiment and commissioned him to raise his company of Irish men, and that having gone to Ireland he had succeeded, though with difficulty, in making up his company of "strong and fensible able persouns" there. He was desirous of conveying them thence direct to Germany, but after long waiting, at great expense, he found it necessary to bring his men to this country to be shipped. Accordingly he has them at the shore side ready to embark hither, but the fear of some civil homings under which he lies deters him from accompanying them, therefore craves their Lordships' protection until he is able to ship his company for Germany. The Lords thereupon grant him a protection till 1st May next. RPC 1627-1628: p. 241

9 October 1627: Threat of horning against certain persons within the constabulary of Haddington, unless in ten days from the date of receiving this charge they report the number and qualities of all fencible persons within their respective bounds . . . . . 23 April 1628: Supplication by Sir Alexander Hamiltoun, apparent of Innerweik, bearing that the protection granted to him for coming to this country with the soldiers enlisted by him from Ireland for the service of the King of Denmark expires on 1st May next, the whole time of which he has spent in Ireland and in coming hither. He has not yet brought over all his people, as some of them are still awaiting opportunity of transport, and he must wait for them and attend the freighting of ships for them. He therefore craves extension of his protection for other two months, which the Lords grant. RPC 1627-1628: p. 316

19 June 1628: Supplication by Sir Alexander Hamiltoun, eldest lawful son to Sir Alexander Hamiltoun, late of Innerweik, bearing that the protection granted to him for attending the soldiers enlisted by him in Ireland and conveying them to Denmark has expired, and he has done all that in him lay to dispatch the business, but that the difficulty of the transport between this kingdom and Ireland has been a very great impediment, so that, though the most part of his company are come over, his lieutenant and a few officers of his company are still in Ireland waiting shipping which he is busy freighting and victualling for them. Sir Alexander Hamilton of Fenton and Innerwick, who was included in a charter granted to his grandfather, "Domino Alexandro Hamilton de Innerwick, militi, et Alexandro Hamilton, nepoti suo, dominij et baronim de Innerwick," dated 12th July 1608. Charter following, under the great seal, of date 12th July 1608. House of Hamilton: p. 311 He had a charter to "Alexandro Hamilton de Fenton, nepoti et heredi Domini Alexandri Hamilton de Innerwick, militis, terrarum dominij et baronice de Innerwick," dated 16th April 1616. He married Isobel, daughter of Sir George Home of Manderston, and had issue: (1) Alexander. (2) Christian, married, first. Sir Patrick Hume of Polwarth, She married, secondly, Robert, third Lord Jedburgh.
