About Col. George Walker
DAR Ancestor #: A119364
George Walker was the son of Jacob Walker and Courtenay Tucker. He served in the American Revolution as an Adjutant of Baylor's Cavalry Regiment, known as "Lady Washington’s Own". A colleague who also served in the Regiment was Henry Lee who earned his nickname, "Light-Horse Harry", during this time for his horsemanship. For his service, the DAR designated George Walker, "Ancestor Number A119364".
Colonel Walker married Mary Meade and had several children. Three were documented by the DAR:
Jacob Walker married Nancy Hawkins John Walker married Sarah Sallie Caffery George Walker married Rachel Caffery
Brothers, John and George, married sisters, Sarah and Rachel Caffery. They were the daughters of John Caffery, DAR Ancestor Number A206694, and Mary Donelson, daughter of Colonel John Donelson and Rachel Shockley.
Jacob and Nancy Walker were the parents of David Walker, lawyer, jurist, and early settler of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Son George served as Senator from Kentucky: he was appointed to the United States Senate by Governor Isaac Shelby to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George M. Bibb. He served from August 30 to December 16, 1814, when a successor, William T. Barry, was elected.
Son John Walker was elected to the Senate from Howard County [Missouri] in 1828, and in 1832, he was elected State Treasurer of Missouri. He held that office until his death.
Per SAR Membership Number 96593 of Thomas Jefferson Vanzant, the 3XGGS of George Walker, "Among a number of officers recommended for promotion in 1781 appears the name of George Walker as Colonel. (He did not receive this promotion before he died in December 1781.) Despite the fact that he did not receive the promotion, we have referred to him as "Colonel".
The actual burial site of Colonel Walker has been lost to history. Nevertheless, we have placed a Memorial Stone in his honor in the Cantrell Gilliand Memorial Garden. May this memorial serve as an expression of the gratitude we owe him for risking his life and braving the unknown to help build a new country: our America.
