A true account of the births of the children of Samuel Humphrey of the Parish of Llangelynin in the County of Merioneth is as followeth

The first childs name is Lydia she was born the 28th day of ye ist mo. 1659.

The 2nd childs name is Daniel he was born the [blank] of ye 6th mo. 1660.

Two twins whose names were Benja & Joseph they were born the [blank] day of ye 5th mo. 1662.

The 5th childs name is Rebecca she was born the 7th day of 2nd mo. 1664.

The si.xth childs name is Ann she was born — day of 3d mo. 1666.

The 7th childs name is Gobeithia she was born the 7th day of ye 7th mo. 1668.

Samuel Humphrey afforsaid & Elizabeth Reese were married before two Justices of peace named Morris Wynn & Robert Owen of Dolessery on ye 20th day of april 1658.

The foresd Saml. Humphrey parted this life the 17th day of the 9th Mo. and was buried ye 19th day of ye same att Bryn-tallwyn 1677, aged -I years and 9 months.

• OWEN HUMPHREY, eldest son and heir of Humphrey ap Hugh, of Llwyn-du, was born circa 1625, and died prior to 1699. He was, it is stated, an officer under Oliver Cromwell, and he served as a Justice of the Peace for Merionethshire under the Protectorate. He was amongst the first in Wales to join the Quakers, and his name is of very frequent occurrence in Bess's "Sufferings of Friends." .... etc.

He signs with near relatived of the Owens in marriage certificates in Pennsylvania. He married Martha Shinn, and went to live in Burlington county, New Jersey, where he was living in 1739 with Rowland and Robert Ellis.

• XII. ELIZABETH POWELL, daughter of John Powell (alias John ap Howell) of the Parish of Llanwddyn, Montgomeryshire, married, circa 1625-1630, Humphrey ap Hugh, of Llwyn-du, "an indefeasible estate of inheritance" in the township of Llwyngwrill, Llangelynn Parish, Comôt of Talybout, Merionethshire. He was the son of Hugh ap David, ap Howell, ap Gronwy, ap Einion, of the line of Ednowain ap Bradwen. Humphrey ap Hugh was descended, in the female lines, from David ap Ievan, of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, grandson of Llewelyn ap Einion, of Livydiarth, from the Nannan family (and the Princes of Powys), and in a number of lines from Ednowain ap Bradwen above mentioned.
• There is extant, in the possession of Edward Griffith, Esq., of Springfield, near Dôlgelley, the settlement of marriage of Anne, one of the daughters of this Humphrey ap Hugh, to Ellis Price (or "ap Rees), father to Rowland Ellis. This document is dated 1 January 1649 "according to the computation of the Church of England," and is an agreement between Rees ap Lewis ap John Griffith, of Dyffrydan, County Merioneth, gentleman, Humffrey ap Hugh, of Llwyngwrill, in the said county, gentleman, and Richard Nanney, of Llwyngwrill and David Ellis, of Gwanas, said county, Gentlemen (the lasst two persons to act as trustees).
• A reproduction of this settlement is in the possession of the writer.
• Humphrey Hugh, who was a Justice of the Peace for his county, was living in the year 1662;1 but seems to have died before 1664, in which year his son and heir, Owen Humphrey, became seized of the estate.2
• Llwyn-du is said to be a fine old mansion (it is still standing), and had originally quite a large estate belonging to it.

• IX. DAVID AP HOWELL,2 of the parish of Llangelynin, Talybont, was born circa 1540- 1550, and died before 1636.
• Upon his father's decease he acquired Lwyndu, Gwastalgoyd Ucha and Issa, and divers other lands and tenements in the township of Llwyngwrill in the said county.
• He married Mary, daughter of Hugh ap John,3 of the parish of Tal y Llyn, in Estimaner Hundred, eight miles south-west from Dôlgelly.
• Hugh ap John, who died before 1588, was the son of John ap Meredith y Bedo ap David ap Jenkin ap Llewelyn ap Einion, of Llwydiarth, in the parish of Meifod, in Montgomeryshire. Hugh ap John, of Tal y Llyn, married Catharine, daughter of Rhys ap David.

• X. HUGH AP DAVID,1 of Llwyn du, in the township of Llwyngwrill, parish of Llangelynin, Talybont, died before 1 January, 1649,2 at which time his son and heir was in possession of Llwyn du. Hugh ap David married Catherine,3 daughter of Rhydderch ap John, of Abergydolwyn, Merionethshire. According to deeds in possession of descendants, Catherine must have been born about 1584. and have been the eldest child. There is extant a marriage settlement showing that Rhydderch ap John, of Abergydolwyn, in the county of Merioneth, and Marianne, daughter of Owen ap David ap Lewis, were married in the first part of 1583.4 Hugh ap David and Catherine, daughter of Rhydderch ap John, were married about 1600-1603,

• XI. HUMPHREY AP HUGH,2 of Llwyn du, in the township of Llwyngwrill, parish of Llangelynin, Talybont, Merionethshire, was born circa 1600-1603. He is named as a party to the deed of marriage settlement made at the time of the marriage of his daughter Anne to Ellis Rees, and dated 1 January, 1649, wherein he is described as : "Humffrey ap Hugh of Llwyngwril in the sayd Com, of Merioneth, gentleman."3 He was living at Llwyn du 1662,4 but died in or before 1664,5 having been a Justice of the Peace for his county.

• quite a good estate), in the township of Rhiwargor, in the parish of Llanwddyn, Montgomeryshire. John ap Howell was taxed as a land owner in Llanwddyn, in a Lay Subsidy of 39 Elizabeth, 1596-7,1 and was buried at Llanwddyn Parish Church, 24 July, 1636.2 He was the son of Howell Gôch, of Gadfa, ap Meredith ap Bedo ap Jenkin, of Caer Einion,3 and he married Sibill,4 daughter (seventh child) of Hugh Gwyn, Esquire, of Peniarth, Caernarvonshire, by Jane (his second wife), daughter of Owen ap Hugh, of Bodeon,5 Anglesey, and sister unto Sir Hugh Owen, Barrister-at-Law and Recorder of Caermarthen, ancestor to the Owens, Baronets, of Orielton, Pembrokeshire. Hugh Gwyn6 was High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire from 2 December, 1599-1600, and was commissioned one of the Justices of the Peace for that county, 11 May, 1611.
• Owen ap Hugh, of Bodeon, Anglesey, was High Sheriff of Anglesey, 30 November, 1562-63, 1579-80 (30 November), and died 1613. His second wife, mother of Jane, who married Hugh Gwyn, was Sibill, youngest daughter of Sir William Griffith, Knt., of Penrhyn, Caernarvonshire, Chamberlain of North Wales, by his second wife, Jane, daughter of John Puleston, of Bers and Havod y Wern.

• Einion, born probably about 1450, descended in the male line from Callwyn ap Tagno, Lord of Llyn who bor arms, a chevron inter three fleur-de-lys, had:

• David ap Howell, of the township of Llwyngwrill, Comôt of Talybont, Merionethshire, Wales, whose "ancient capital messuage" in that township, called Llwyn-du, was derived through a female line from Ednowen ap Bradwen, who flourished about 1137, and bore arms, gules, three snakes, nowed; and who was lord of nearly all the Comôt of Talybont. Though the extant pedigrees do not show just where the marriage in the line of Callwyn ap Tagno, Lord of Llyn, with the heiress of the line of Ednowen ap Bradwen, came in, yet Llwyn-du was "an indefeasible estate of inheritance" therefore David ap Howell could only have obtained it as a descendant of Ednowen ap Bradwen. David was born about 1540, and married Mary, daughter of Hugh ap John, of Taly Llyn, a parish (now) in the union of Dôlgelly, in the Comôt of Estimaner, Merionethshire, eight miles southwest of Dôlgelly town.

Elizabeth's mother was Sybill, daughter of Hugh Gwynn, of Penarth, High Sheriff of Caernorvonshire, descended from Sir William Griffith, of Penrhyn; the Herberts of Raglan, and from King Edward I, of England. The wife of Hugh Gwynn was Jane, daughter of Owen ap Hugh of Bodeon in Anglesey, High Sheriff of Anglesey, 1579-80, who died in 1613; descended from Meuric ap Llewelyn ap Halkin of Bodeon, 8th in descent from Hava, son of Kundhelw, Lord of Cwmwd Lhivon, living 1150. Humphrey ap Hugh and his wife Elizabeth had among other issue :
• Owen Humphrey, eldest son and heir, born about 1625, died prior to 1699. He is said to have been an officer under Cromwell and he certainly served as a Justice for Merionethshire under the Protectorate. He was among the first in Wales to join the Society of Friends, and his name frequently occurs in Besse's Sufferings of Friends. In 1662, having with his brother Samuel, "refused to pay a demand for tithes" he was prosecuted in the

• Sheriff's Court and execution was awarded against him by which his cattle were seized. After his father's decease in 1664 or 1665, he became seized of the "ancient demesne lands of Llwyn-du" and deeded therefrom a lot of ground for a burial place for Friends. Owen Humphrey, having been heavily fined, it is believed that he left little personal estate, in fact what little money he had remaining he lent freely to Friends going to Pennsylvania. He is believed to have been twice married but all of his seven children were by his first wife, name unknown, among whom were, Rebecca, wife of Robert Owen, of Merion, Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania, the progenitor of the Owen family of Philadelphia, an account of which is given elsewhere in these pages; and Joshua Owen, before mentioned, of Burlington county, New Jersey, who married Martha Shinn.

Samuel Humphrey is the son of Humphrey AP Hugh Howel and Elizabeth verch Powell, daughter of John Powell and Sibill Gwyn. He was united to Elizabeth Rees on 20 Apr 1658. They were the parents of eight childrten, born in Wales and emmigrated to Pennsylvania where they lived out their lives:
