Son of Chloe Waite and Alexander Bushnell. Married first wife, Mary "Polly" Borden, on 25 July 1786 at Hartland Township, Hartford, Connecticut. Mary died in the typhoid epidemic of 1828 and on 8 May 1829, he married his second wife, Candace Sherman Adams, the widow of Job Adams of Barre, Washington, Vermont.
