About the time when Conrad was 1 yr. old his father moved the family to North Carolina which is now Grainger Co., TN. It was N.C. under June 1, 1796. Good friend of Davy Crockett (hunted together). First deep conveying land in county was Henry Rowan to Conrad Pile. Nicknamed 'Coonrod' to distinguish him from a grandson that was named after him. Great, Great Grandfather to Sgt. Al York (most decorated soldier during WW1). From Sgt. York's diary he states: 'How long my ancestors have lived in TN. is farther than I can tell. They were the first persons that settled this country. My great-great grandfather was the first white man to settle here. When Grandpap first came he lived in a rock house, a cave, near Wolf River in the Pall Mall Valley. We live under the mt., down in the river-bottom sections, a little over 500' from the tope of the mt., a distance of 5 mi.'s from the KT. line. My great-great grandfather, Conrad Pile, took up this land & owned all of the valley & part of the mt. He was the first white man there & took first choice. There is a bunch of Piles still around here.' He was considered a 'Long Hunters' (expert at shooting rifle).
