Crossville Chronicle April 27, 1933
Fentress county and Jamestown were much stirred last week when it became know that grave robbers had desecrated the grave of Mary Pile, who had been dead for almost 100 years, in searching for a supposed buried treasure. Mary Pile, wife of Conrad Pile and grandmother of Sgt Alvin C York, died in 1843 and daughter, Mary, died in 1840; both graves were desecrated. It is said that Conrood Pile was credited with having a keg of gold coins hidden and was supposed to have told an old negro slave, "Aunt Rose", of its whereabouts before he died in 1849. Much search has been made at different times but no gold has ever been found. Sgt York lives at Pall Mall, a few miles north of Jamestown and only a short distance from the cemetery. York heard a car pass his house several times and night the graves were disturbed and saw the light of a car near the cemetery, but he thought the drivers of the cars were bootleggers and made no investigation at the time.
