Biography

Daniel McCoy, Jr. was born April 26, 1798 in the Cherokee Nation (East). He was the son of Daniel McCoy, a white man, and Lucy Fields, a Cherokee woman. He married Margaret Wolf in 1822. [1] Daniel and Margaret were the parents of thirteen children: Joseph, Sallie, James, Rory, Ruth, Ellen, Samuel, Mary, Amanda, Margaret, Daniel, and Sabra. [2] The 1835 Cherokee census shows the family living on Covewhulla Creek, Cherokee Nation, now Georgia. [3] Margaret died in 1850. The 1851 Drennan Roll lists Daniel and nine children living in Tahlequah District, Indian Territory. [4] Daniel next married a widow, Letitia Chambers Starr. Daniel and Lettie were the parents of one daughter, Annie. Daniel was a signer of the 1839 Act of Union and the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. He also served as a National Committee member and a circuit judge. He died in January, 1857.[5]
