Biography

About 1690 two Morrisons, probably brothers, Andrew and Daniel, emigrated to New England. The first made his home at New Haven, Conn., but left no definite records of his immediate family; and the second resided at Newbury, Mass., and was the father by his first wife, Hannah Griffin, of at least six children, Daniel, John, Hannah, Ebenezer, Abigail, and Mary. In 1707 he married, as his second wife, Mary Foulsom, of Exeter, N.H. He then made his home at Rowley, Mass., and had issue there of Lydia and Beriah.

Daniel Morrison was born circa 1668. He immigrated to Massachusetts and was a resident of Newbury, Mass. in 1690, where he resided many years and was a farmer.

Daniel married:

  1. About 1690 to Hannah Griffin, daughter of John Griffin and Lydia (Shatswell) Griffin, of Merrimack Village. died October 9, 1700.
  2. March 27, 1707 at Newbury to Mary Foulsom, daughter of Deacon John Foulsom of Exeter, New Hampshire. She was born September 27, 1664 and died February 14, 1711.
  3. 25 NOV 1712 at Rowley to Abigail Kimball, daughter of John Kimball (died 1726).
  4. another Mary (?nee) who survived him. He made a will November 3, 1736, proved May 10, 1737, showing that he died between those two dates. To his wife Mary, he gave £10 bills of credit, provided she accept his last will and testament.

Daniel first married Hannah Griffin, daughter of John Griffin and Lydia (Shatswell) Griffin, of Merrimack Village. Hannah and her twin brother, John Shatswell Griffin, were born April 2, 1671, in Bradford, Massachusetts. A deed dated April 7, 1709 gives the details of land that was divided among her siblings by her widowed mother, when her father died. (For the details, see the profile of her mother Shatswell-3

Many land transactions tell us about the families of this area. Daniel is identified as "yeoman" and Thomas Staples, his brother-in-law, having married Hannah's sister, Elizabeth, in 1694. On May 20,1695, he and Thomas Staples purchased eighteen acres of land from Abiel Long and his wife Hannah.

On February 28, 1696, he was one of the 64 persons taxed for building the West End Meeting House. On March 14, 1699-1700, he bought fifteen acres from Moses Chase. On February 3, 1706-7, he purchased twenty-seven acres, known as the "Rate lott" from Stephen Greenleaf of Newbury.

Daniel's wife, Hannah died October 9, 1700. He married secondly, on March 27, 1707, Mary Foulsom, daughter of Deacon John Foulsom of Exeter, New Hampshire. She was born September 27, 1664 and died February 14, 1711.

On June 20, 1710, Daniel and Thomas Staples, in partnership, purchased another eighteen acres of woodland from Abiel Long. In June 9, 1714, Daniel bought woodland on the Bradford road from Sarah Thompson.

On March 16, 1726, Daniel, for "love and affection," made a gift of forty acres, in Newbury, on the Bradford road, to his son John Morrison. John was born in Newbury, March 28, 1693, second son of Hannah.

On April 1, 1731, Daniel sold for £790, a tenement of housing and thirty-two acres of land to Timothy Morse. On December 23, 1731, he bought for £280, thirty acres in Rowley. He moved from Newbury and became a citizen of Rowley, soon after that date.

Daniel, twice widowed, married a third time to another Mary (?nee) who survived him. He made a will November 3, 1736, proved May 10, 1737, showing that he died between those two dates. To his wife Mary, he gave £10 bills of credit, provided she accept his last will and testament.

From his Will, we find the names of his children:

By his first marriage to Hannah Griffin:

Daniel Morrison, II, born August 1, 1691, in Newbury, resided in Rowley, Massachusetts John Morrison, born March 28, 1693, in Newbury, bought lands in Stratham on December 9, 1717 Hannah Morrison, born January 27, 1695-6, in Newbury Ebenezer Morrison, born October 6, 1697, in Newbury, resided at Stratham, formerly a part of Exeter, New Hamphshire, in 1723 Mary Morrison, born March 20, 1699, married Charles Annis, intentions filed October 6, 1716 Abigail Morrison, married Roger Chase of Newbury, March 16, 1725 Daniel's twin daughters from his second marriage to Mary Foulsom were not mentioned in his Will, indicating that they probably died young, or at least before 1736. Daniel and Mary's children are:

Two stillborn children on April 1 and April 2, 1702 Lydia Morrison (twin) born February 4, 1710 Beriah Morrison (twin) born February 4, 1710
