About David Abraham Swanepoel

It has come to my attention that many of the profiles for deceased people created by me, were private. That was never my intention and probably caused by leaving it to Geni to decide. I today (2020-10-06) revisited all of them. Only a few remain private for various reasons, like being born after 1915 with no death notice available. People nowadays become very old and you cannot just decide they must be deceased, because they are almost or over 100.

Should you see any errors on my tree, or have any photos, documents, dates or any other information you would like to add, correct, or update, preferably please contact me so I can amend the relevant profile. The same applies for profile merging. You can edit yourself if you have documentary proof.

Please never edit notes under the heading "Notes by David Abraham Swanepoel" or undersigned by me. Type 4 dashes to create a demarcation line and type below what you are in disagreement with, or start a pubic discussion, or still the best, contact me through the message facility.

Alle bydraes deur my is onderhewig aan ‘n vrywaring. Sommiges, waar die bydrae minimaal was, is bloot onderteken.

All contributions by me are subject to an indemnity. Some, where the contribution was minimal, were simply signed.

Longer notes start with “Notes by David Abraham Swanepoel” and ended by:

Disclaimer: no responsibility is accepted for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether quoted, repackaged or written by myself.

It was then shortened to one “contribution by” clause at the top, which is also used for shorter contributions.

Bydrae deur David Abraham Swanepoel onderhewig aan vrywaring in my profiel. Inligting mag gebruik word onder lisensie Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International tensy ‘n ander regspersoon se kopiereg aangedui word.

of /or Contribution by David Abraham Swanepoel subject to disclaimer in my profile. Information may be used under license Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International unless another legal entity's copyright is indicated.

Any of the 3 can be found. When working on contributions for other reasons, it may be changed to the latest format, but I have no intention of doing so with all of them.

Thank you.

My way of working

I love to write all sorts of notes. This is mainly Afrikaans as I started out on MyHeritage where the original tree still is, limited to family members. I decided to join Geni too, as there are fewer limitations and I can contribute to a world tree. Most of the notes were just copied over. Sentimental and private information was taken out. A “free” translation will be provided for free on request. A proper translation can be provided against the cost of such a translation. Machine translation is not advised. Furthermore, if you need information for any purpose other than hobbying, you are advised to use the services of a professional genealogist.

I am aware that there is no such thing as a family crest. I however do not like the “empty” avatars and used any crest found on the internet, by lack of a portrait photograph or gravestone on profiles I have worked on. This is the last step after I have worked on a profile and did quality control on, as a sort of seal of quality for myself. However, as implied above and at each note, I do not guarantee any quality and I also frequently revise my notes as new information becomes available. I have also designed a “generic” crest when none other is found, the one with a picture of a hare in it. This can refer to any family. I have found this has been taken over by MyHeritage profile owners as authentic, so I am phasing it out and replace it with just the surname (created with a text-to-image converter).

The concept of “person of interest to me”. The question is how far you can go with creating profiles. With family, just blood family of your in-laws. “Close” family or very much removed family? That is your choice, but sometimes people, family or not, just keep proliferating. You worked very hard with scant information. Finally you find a death notice of the person that interest you, find he or she had many children, each of those had many children, it is now around 1900 and the mortality for people dying before their old age has dropped tremendously. Online records are more readily available – in fact sometimes those people are a genealogist’s dream. You only have so much time though. Therefore I did not open profiles for people that were beyond my ”Interest”. This concept is hard to define. Just do not accept that if I profiled only one child of a couple, that he or she may not have any siblings, or that a couple had no children. I usually at least open a profile for a known spouse.

Creating a profile or adding records for politically associated or otherwise controversial people, by no means means I support or admire them. I have worked with profiles of people from the far left to the far right.

I do not cite living information providers by name unless I have their permission. I have found that such people are reluctant to give permission as the information is subject to their own memory that they do not fully trust. Oral tradition has its place in any historiography, but its reliability is far less than written sources.

Place names: It is historically correct to use the name of a place as it was when an event took place. A birth in Church Street West, Pretoria, South African Republic in 1890, therefore did not take place in WF Nkomo Street, City of Tshwane, Province of Gauteng, Republic of South Africa. Even worse if a place was founded long after the event. My GGF Swanepoel is indicated on his death notice as born in Zastron in 1845. The town was only founded in 1876. He was essentially born stateless in the vicinity of the later town, as other records correctly indicate “over the grenzen” (across the borders, from a Cape perspective). Unfortunately Geni conveniently maps localities to modern names if a few letters are typed.

Now you may ask, why am I using modern names for grave sites. I usually copy and paste the format of the eGGSA grave database. The reason is, that this is still the set-up. Deceased buried in Transvaal now find themselves in any of 4 new provinces. Unless an exhumation took place that we do not know of, people buried in Pretoria are now buried in the province of Gauteng although they did not move an inch. The argument is not fool-proof, but indicating it like this, facilitates visits to such graves especially if the eGGSA grave web address is also provided, taking the reader to the graveyard’s coordinates.

I normally do not open or cooperate on profiles of living people. According to my interpretation of the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act (4/2013) it is illegal to publish records of living people without their permission. Exceptions are public figures whose information is on the internet anyway.

You can use my information without consultation as per the licence notice at each formal note. That is, you can copy, but must acknowledge and do not use it for profit. For any derivates, i.e. based mostly on my work but with some changes, contacting me first will be highly appreciated.

_____

'n Vroedvrou (opgeleide spesialisverpleegsuster) was teenwoordig.

Willem van (den) Hille is your 17th great grandfather. You → Jacobus Christoffel Swanepoel, b6c4d2e1f3g11h2 your father → David Abraham Swanepoel, b6c4d2e1f3g11, his father → Jacobus Christoffel Swanepoel, b6c4d2e1f3, his father → Jacobus Christoffel Swanepoel, b6c4d2e1, his father → Anna Cornelia Swanepoel, b7c7d2, his mother → Abraham Christoffel Swanepoel, b7c7, her father → Hendrik Swanepoel, b7, his father → Pieter Jansz Swanepoel, SV/PROG, his father → Maria Swanepoel, his mother → Maria Herebout, her mother → Charles Van Hille, her father → Eloy van Hille, his father → Joos van Hille, his father → Cornelis van Hille, his father → Jan van Hille, his father → Jan van Hille, his father → Martin van Hille, his father → Logier van Hille, his father → Willem van (den) Hille, his father

(A.J. Swanepoel in medewerking met Aletta Maria Swanepoel. 1999. n Geslagregister van Swanepoel-families in Suid-Afrika. Pretoria: A.J. Swanepoel. CD weergawe, 2015.

My “Ancient European Origins” is 15% Metal Age Invader, 41% Farmer, 40% Hunter-Gatherer en 4% Non-European.

'n Boek is in wording.
