John was a farmer and a tanner at Blackberry Hill. He served his time as an apprentice with Patrick Gowen. He was also a curryer and a shoe maker. John served as Deacon of Calvary Baptist Church in East Lebanon.

John served his time at the tanners' trade at Blackberry Hill in Berwick with his future father-in-law, Patrick Gowen.

John and Mary married on 27 February 1791 at Berwick, York, Maine.

They settled on wild land on Mount Hope in Sanford by 1793. They were parents of twelve children; Elias, Draxcy, Aphia, Adah, Ebenezer, Affa, John, Ivory, Charles, Draxcy, Rhoda, Otis.

Libby Family Burial Ground is located on Mount Hope Road on the homestead land settled on by John and Mary soon after their marriage and where they resided for life.
