Thomas was born at Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts, in September 1653, the son of John Freeman and Mercy Prence.[1] [2] [3] [4]

Thomas was one of the eight founders of the church at Harwich (now Brewster) and served as its first deacon.[5] [6]

Thomas Freeman married Rebecca Sparrow on December 31, 1673, at Harwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts.[7] [8][9] They had ten children [10] [4]:

Will of Deacon Thomas Freeman [11]

Thomas wrote his Will on February 4, 1715/16, when his son Thomas was sick. (His son died about a month later). The Will was entered into probate on April 20, 1717, so he died between those dates. The Inventory of Thomas Freeman's estate was taken on April 26, 1717, by John Sparrow and John Mulford. Son Thomas and wife Rebecca Freeman were appointed Executor and Executrix in Thomas's Will. The witnesses to his Will were Edward Snow, Dorcas Paine and Nath'll Freeman. Thomas made bequests to:

  • sons Thomas, Joseph, Prince, Hatsell, Edmond
  • brother John Freeman
  • wife Rebecka
  • daughters Mercy, Rebecka

He died on 9 February 1715/16 in Harwich, Massachusetts. [12]

Wife Rebecca (Sparrow) Freeman outlived Thomas by many years and died on February 7, 1740.[13]

"Thomas Freeman, son of Major John Freeman of Eastham, born in 1653, married Rebecca, daughter of Jonathan Sparrow, December 31, 1673, and not long after settled upon land here, which he had of his father. He was a very prominent man in the settlement, was one of the petitioners for the incorporation of the town, and in 1700 one of the founders of the first church. He was the first town clerk whose name appears upon the first book of Harwich records, and one of the first selectmen of the town. He died February 9, 1715-16. His wife, Rebecca, died in 1740, aged eighty-five years. He was the first deacon of the church. He had ten children. His sons, Thomas, Edmund and Joseph, were prominent men."
