About Deacon William Patrick

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NEW YORK with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A088759

John W. Patrick described his father as being "more than middling size and strength" with a fine constitution. He had a light complexion, blue eyes and a manly yet peaceful countenance with a slightly Roman nose. William did not go to church until 1763 . He was a probationer for the deacons and ordained as a deacon in 1763 in Bennington, VT. He owned the Patrick Inn in Bemis Heights, NY. (Albany). He was in the military in 1777 in the Battle of Saratoga. He was a member of the first "Stillwater" Congregational Church.

He was never an enlisted soldier but took part as a citizen who simply shouldered his musket. with others, fought in several battles and at the surrender of Burgoyne. His house was used as a fortified safe place by many others.

Found in a letter that Gabe Morris had: The first that I have found definitely of our Patrick ancestors is William Patrick 1733-1823 who married Elizabeth Campbell about 1759, daughter of Rev Robert Campbell. The Campbells and Patricks had lived in the town of Canaan, Litchfeld Co Conn for the purpose of removing latter to Stillwater NY which they did in 1762-1763 the French and Indian war having closed in 1761. Her father was the minister at Stillwater until his death in 1789. He was born in Ireland in 1709 and his father's name was also Robert who cam to Boston in 1714. William Patrick was not a soldier in the Revolution but was a member of a committee of safety in 1777 and his son Robert (our ancestor) was a soldier in the 13th Albany Co Reg't.
