About Donald Richard Hurlbert
Don was a commercial fisherman in Alaska and Westport, Washington most of his life. He was known as a expert beekeeper in the Seattle area. He worked with the Seattle Arboretum and captured many wild bees from there. He sold his honey all over the Seattle area. He was also an avid gun smith and hunter. He and Hazel never had any kids but were able to travel a lot and were known as a loving, gracious and friendly couple. Their home was always a welcoming stop. Don built their home at 4204 Baker Avenue NW in the Ballard Neighborhood of Seattle, after his marriage to Hazel. Their adjacent lot was sold upon Hazel's death, to Seattle P Patch Community Garden. That vacant lot is now known as "Hazel's P Patch" and is loved by many community members as a place to garden, keep bees, and gather. It is a fine tribute to Don & Hazel's love of gardening and beekeeping.
