Qualified as an MD (Bachelor of Medicine) in 3½ years. Then studied specialties in University College and Barts Hospitals in London. Oct-Dec 1877 - Traveled through Europe seeking information on the Knobels 1878 - Opened a practice in Philippolis, Orange Free State, South Africa (4½ years) Bought a house next door to JFM Schultz in Philippollis (future Father-in-law) 1882 - Replaced Dr Reid (died) in Colesberg. Dr Brodie (from Johannesburg) replaced him and bought his house. Bought a house near the market square Got engaged to the eldest daughter of JFM Schulz. 1885 - Married A.M.E. Schultz 1887 - Relocated to Pretoria to take over Dr. Esselen's practice. Bought and lived in 121 Schoeman St.

Source: Unknown Newspaper Article Johan Balthazer Knobel, M.D. (Glasgow, 1877), L.R.C.S. (Edin., 1877) (1853-1931) was born at Colesberg, the son of a surveyor, and was an ordinary digger on the River and Dry Diggings at Kimberley before proceeding to Glasgow to qualify in Medicine. Returning to South Africa in 1877, he was licensed in the Cape and Orange Free State and settled at Philloppolis. He remained there until 1885 when he crossed the River to take over Dr. Duncan Reid's practice at Colesburg. In 1888 he trekked to Pretoria, having purchased the late Dr. Esselen's practice. 'An active, able, genial gentleman', Dr. Knobel proved a great success as Superintendent of both the temporary and later the Volks Hospitaal until 1896, and he was later elected to the Geneeskundige Commissie [Medical Commission] as well. AS Vice-Chairman of the Transvaal Red Cross Society (established in 1896) and Vice-President of the Transvaal Ambulance Association, he served in the South African War [Boer War] as a surgeon in the field with the commandoes on the Natal border; and as a surgeon in the field with the commandoes on the Natal border; and as Mayor of Pretoria he surrendered the Capital to Lord Roberts in June, 1900. After the war he visited Europe and then returned to Middelburg in the Transvaal where he also became Mayor. When the First World War broke out he volunteered his services for the South West African Campaign and served on the staff of the military hospital at Keemanshoop [SWA/Namibia]. Thereafter he went to Gobabis [Namibia] as district surgeon and remained there until he finally retired to his farm in the district in 1924. He was greatly respected by the German community and was accorded a military funeral by the Deutsche Krieger Verein [German Veterans Association] on his death in 1931.
