Civilian Conductor T J Knobel (Noble), attached to 12th Company, Army Service Corps. Son of Johann Ludwig Knobel and Clara Magdalena Knobel (nee Bedford). Husband of Helena Catharine Louisa Knobel (nee Kemper). He volunteered for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo-Boer War. He died of enteric fever (typhoid) at 19 Stationary Hospital, Harrismith on 27 Feb 1902 aged 48 years and 6 months. He was buried on 28 Feb 1902.
The surname was recorded as Knobel on his death notice, on his burial record, and on In Memoriam by S Watt. Recorded as Noble on the South African Field Force Casualty Roll.

They left for Pretoria (date unknown) where Thomas worked for T.W. Beckett, Merchant in Pretoria. The family lived near the Fountains, Pretoria. They left for Amersfort, Transvaal (date unknown) where Thomas worked in a store. The family lived on a farm, “Vlakplaas” which belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church. The Minister was his brother, Rev. William Knobel. The farmhouse was burned down during the South African [Boer] War and they were taken to the Refugee Camp (Concentration Camp) at Volksrust. The father had in the meantime joined the Commando and was taken prisoner. He died in a Prisoner-of-War Camp and is buried at Harrismith, Orange Free State.
