About Dr. Lucian Berwin

Lucian Berwin was a Ph.D. Juris. A Lawyer. In 1914 he lived at Claudiusstrasse 14 in Berlin. He certified that Dr. Moritz Berwin had died. I presume that was his father.

Bio of Dr. of law Lucian Berwin (circa 1880-?) Connected with Dr. of law Moritz Berwin (1842-1914)

Dr. Lucian Berwin signed a death certificate of Dr. Moritz Berwin in the presence of a Civil Officer. The date was September 25, 1914 in Berlin.

Dr. Moritz Berwin held a doctor juris, the law degree. Based on limited records he was born April 27, 1842 in the town of Swarzedz, Prussia, now Poland. He is not listed in the 1916 phone directory of Berlin or thereafter.

His presumed son, Dr. Lucian Berwin, was listed in the 1916 phone directory of Berlin. He lived in Charlottenberg 4 on Mommsenstr 62 and his phone number was Steinplatz 126 13.

Lucian was listed in the 1916 Berlin phone directory as a “Gerichtsassessor”. A Gerichtsassessor is “In the German legal system, the obsolete designation Gerichtsassessor was held by judges or federal prosecutors, whose employment status today would be "on probation". Attainment of the second state legal qualification (the so-called "Competence to the Justiceship") was always a pre-requisite. The appointment took place with the intention that the Gerichtsassessor would be employed later in his lifetime as a judge.” (Babylon online definition)

In the 1920 Berlin phone directory found on Ancestry.com Lucian is found living at the same place and with the same phone number but his title or profession is listed as “Amtsrichter”. According to Babylon translation online this means he was a District Court Judge. His brother Moritz was not in the 1920 phone book.

Lucian is listed in the 1930 Berlin phone book at the same address as previously, with a different telephone number. In the 1930 book he is listed as a Landger-Dir. A Landsgerichts Director is a high official in an area or district.

In the 1938 Berlin phone book Lucian is not listed but at his address on Mommsen Strasse is living Lina Berwin. Up as recently as 1980 a person named L. Berwin lived at the same address on Mommsen Strasse.

Neither person is listed in Yad Vashem.

Eva Berwin Niesser recalled that one of the Berwins held a high position in the court system of one of the German provinces. This could be Lucian.

From the Berwin data in the Leo Baeck files of John H Richter of Ann Arbor, Michigan genealogical expert.

Lucian was married to Lina Schramm.
