Biography

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Parish-212

Thomas Parish was baptized on April 26, 1614 at Nayland, Suffolk, England the "son of Thomas Parrish."

In 1635 he was enrolled as a "clothier," aged 22 at London as a passenger for New England on the Increase. In New England he was a Planter as well as a Surgeon/Physician. His first residence was Watertown; in 1636 he moved to Cambridge. At Cambridge he became a Freeman on April 18, 1637 and was therefore admitted to the Cambridge church along with his wife, "after giving her conversion narrative." Wife of Thomas Parish was Mary Danforth, daughter of Nicholas Danforth.

He was admitted into the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1641.

Estate

He was granted twenty acres at Watertown on July 25, 1636. At Cambridge by 1639 he held a parcel that was sold to Mr. William Witherell. In 1642 he held four parcels: "in the West End, a dwelling house, barn, outhouses and four acres of land;" "in the New West Field two acres;: "in the Neck of Land two and twenty acres & half;" and "in Fresh Pond Meadow two acres & half." These lands all sold by 1654

Children of Thomas and Mary Parish

  1. Mary Parish was born at Cambridge on April 3, 1638. She was named in the will of her grandfather on December 24, 1652. She probably returned to England with her father.
  2. Thomas Parish was born at Cambridge on July 21, 1641. He graduated from Harvard College in 1659 and may have rejoined his father in England following his graduation.
  3. Elizabeth Parish was born about 1644; named in the will of her grandfather on December 24, 1652.

Death and Burial

Thomas Parish died after 1657. He may have returned to Nayland, England prior to 1649 since no further records are found in New England after 1643. Anderson in his series "Great Migration" says "He may be the 'Thomas Parish, householder,' who was buried at Nayland, Suffolk, on 9 November 1665."

Research Notes

Note: Statement from p. 360 of Anderson's Great Migration, Bibliographic Note: "In 1958 Walter Goodwin Davis, in his account of Robert Parish of Groton, discussed some problems relating to the family of Thomas Parish, and concluded that, contrary to some claims, Robert was not son of Thomas." Note: According to Anderson's Great Migration p. 360, there was only one daughter named Mary. Note: "Daniels of Massachusetts Bay Colony" and Pope's "Pioneers of Massachussetts" both indicate Thomas arrived in Massachutts aboard the Increase in April 1635. The passenger list contains the name of Thomas Parish, age 22 dated 15 Apr 1635.

Arrived in America on the "Increase" in April 1635

After a long study, I have concluded that John Parish must be a son of Thomas. This is not proven, but was suspected by Savage in the 17th century and it fits the known facts well.

Note that Thomas actual profession as a doctor, but he was listed as a clothier on the manifest of the "Increase". My guess is this decption was required to allow him to obtain permission to leave England.
