Biography

Ebenezer was born in 1645 to Robert Moon and Dorothy Osbourne in Boston. In about 1650, his family moved to Newport, Rhode Island. Newport was founded in 1639.

Ebenezer was an early businessmen in Newport. For instance, he sold some shoes to Peleg Sanford that Sanford described in a letter to his wife Mary:

Newport July 15: 1667 Deare Love [his wife Mary]: the Report of thy hea[l]th & Safe being at tanton (after thy most tedious voyadg was to me noe Small Comfort but alsoe being Informed of the truble tht yo was forsed to pas through after yor arivall theare, was very uncomfortable unto me to heare, but yo being Sencable of my Condition must attrubute Every thing unto its Right Senter: tht being given yo may be assuered yo should not have beene Exsposed to tht yo have Beene without my presence, Deare I have by the Bearer heare of Ebenezer Moone Sent the a pa[ir] of shoes which hoop will fitt, if not I pray let me know as alsoe for what yo want Ellce Could I gitt soe much into Fauer as to procuer Leave I would not long be from the But be suer I shall be very vegelant to attend and if possible Cann, will Sundainly give the a vissett, my Duty to Mothr with Reale Love to Brothr and Sister I take leave and Remaine thy Ever Loveing Husband The wax seal that Ebenezer used for correspondence was described as follows in an article published in The Rhode Island Historical Magazine (1884):

In this description of impressions in wax of seals found on old letters dating from 1675 to 1783 the intention and hope is that some genealogist may find either by the Arms described or by the names a clue to some missing link in the line he may be tracing... The first is dated Newport, 1675, used by Ebenezer Moone—Per pale indented Argent and Azure. Crest three ostrich feathers on a helmet. In about 1669, Ebenezer married someone whose name is unknown. They had at least three children. His wife must have passed away in about 1675.

In 1677, Ebenezer married Rebecca Peabody in Newport, Rhode Island Colony. They had at least four children.

In 1687, Rebecca's father John passed away. In his will, he named seven sons-in-law including Ebenezer Moon. Each received "part and share of ye moveables and stock as it fell by lott."

Prior to their marriage, Rebecca was a member of the Second Baptist church of Newport. In 1692, Ebenezer is listed as a member of the First Sabbatarian Church of Newport. The Sabbatarian (or Seventh-Day Baptist) Church was founded in 1671 by seven members of Newport's First Baptist Church [1].

In 1712, Ebenezer passed away in Newport. He's buried in the Newport Common Burying Ground.
