About Edith Beecher

The elder Christopher Gist and his wife Edith Cromwell came to Maryland in 1679. Christopher was a member of the Church of England, and a surveyor. Edith was the daughter of Sir Oliver Cromwell, a cousin of “Lord Protector” Cromwell. They had one son, Richard, who married Zipporah Murray. Richard was one of the Commissioners who laid out the town of Baltimore, a Captain of the County Militia, and a leader of the Maryland Militia. They had nine children, and the oldest son was Christopher, born about 1705, who became a successful business man, especially with native Americans.

Notes for Edith Cromwell: "She was the sister of Richard, William and John Cromwell, early emigrants to the Province of Maryland. This relationship is shown in various deeds and wills. In 1680, Edith witnessed the will of her brother, William Cromwell. (Balt. Co. Md. Original Wills, Box 1, Folder 29, Hall of Records, Annapolis). The signature of Edith and her son Richard, show that they spelled their family name -- Gist. Different spellings in the records are due to mistakes of clerks." - Dorsey book. The will of Edith Cromwell Gist Williams Beecher dated 23 May, 1694 Some online GEDCOMs say the father of these siblings is Henry Cromwell ESQ., others say Richard, William or John Cromwell... I don't know the sources for any of this, so I have not assigned her parents. Of course it is very tempting to try to make her the grandaughter of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector... The founder of the Gist family, of Maryland, was Christopher Gist, or Guest, who migrated from England and settled in Maryland on the south side of the Patapsco river in 1682, but removed in 1691 to Baltimore county. He married Edith Cromwell, of the family of the great Oliver Cromwell, lord protector of England. Their son, Richard (1684-1741),

From this we know that Christopher Gist (my original immigrant) died before 21 February 1693, the date of the deed. We know his wife's name was Edith and that she subsequently married John Beecher. This information would lead us to look for Christopher's will, which happens to list his heirs. We are alerted to look at documents for Edith (maiden name?) Gist Beecher's life also under the new name Beecher.

Christopher Richard Gist married Edith Cromwell (1660–1694), who is believed to have been a relative of England's Lord Protector
