Biography

Freeman Ellis was born circa 1661, the son of Lt John Ellis and Elizabeth Freeman of Sandwich, Massachusetts[1] [2].

He moved with his mother to the town now called Rochester while he was a child, and is listed among those who took the oath of fidelity and served on a committee in 1681[3][4] [1]

Freeman's wife was Mercy Unknown[2], who may have been related to the Winslow family, based on land ownership and naming patterns [1]

Some online family trees indicate his wife was Mercy, the daughter of Kenelm Winslow, who married Malatiah White circa 1705 and had a child on March 17, 1706[5]. This information is inconsistent with the facts. Since Mercy Ellis was Freeman's wife when he wrote his will in 1710 and when it was proved in 1728, she could not have been Mercy Winslow, the wife of Malatiah White.

The children of Freeman and Mercy (Unknown) Ellis were born in Rochester, including:

  1. Thankful, born May 29, 1687, no further record found[6] [1] [2]
  2. Joel, born February 5, 1688[7] , who married Mary Gatchell[1] [2]
  3. Dorothy, born January 1, 1691[8], who married Nathaniel Fish[1] [2]
  4. Elizabeth, born October 2, 1693[9], who married Peter Swain, son of Joseph[1] [2]
  5. Ebenezer, born February 7, 1695[10], who married Charity Swain, daughter of Joseph[1] [2]
  6. Patience, born August 1, 1699[11], who married Edward Wing and then married William Wood[1] [2]
  7. Gideon, born February 5, (1700/1?)[12] [1] [2]
  8. Mordecai, born October 7, 1702[13], who married Margaret Swain, daughter of Joseph[1] [2]
  9. Eleanor, born September 7, 1703[14], who married Stephen Swain, son of John[1] [2]
  10. Mercy, born about 1705[15], no further record found.[1] [2]

His death occurred sometime after 4 April 1716, when he witnessed his brother William's will[16] , and June 20, 1728, when his own will was proved. His will was dated August 4, 1710[17] [1]. His will named his wife Mercy and four sons, Joel, Ebenezer, Mordecai, and Gideon, and mentions daughters but does not name them[18] [17][1]
