Edward Sale

Though Edward's first wife Margaret ____ Searle/Sale could have been the mother of several children, her banishment for adultery makes it unlikely, and it is more likely that Edward's second wife Rebecca, who died in 1664, was the mother of most children, including Miriam. 1609 Birth and Baptism

Edward Sale, son of Edward, son of John, was bapt at Chesham 24 Dec 1609; [1]

Edward Sale Jr was christened at Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England on December 24 1609, which means he could have been born on that date or earlier. [2]

His parents are Edward Sale and Elizabeth Gifford.

1635 Immigration to Massachusetts

Immigrated from Chesham, Buckinghamshire, to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the "Elizabeth & Ann (On 27 April 1635, "Edward Sall," aged 24, was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Elizabeth & Ann).

Edward came to New England in the "Elizabeth and Ann" in Apr 1635, aged 24 (Hotton’s ‘Original Lists,” p. 70) bringing with him his nephew Daniel Preston. [1]

1637 Marblehead and Hingham

First settled in Marblehead; moved to Hingham in 1637.

Edward was at Marblehead a short time, and of Weymouth in 1637, whence he removed to Rehoboth about 1643, but later returned to Weymouth, where he died about 1692. [1]

1637 Freeman

He was made freeman 2 Nov 1637 and was listed as an inhabitant of Weymouth in 1640. He lived in Rehoboth for a time but returned to Weymouth. [3]

Edward was admitted freeman on Nov. 2, 1637. [1]

1637 Marriage to Margaret

Married about 1636 to Margaret. [1]
In Jun. 1637 at Boston, Edward was found guilty and punished for drunkenness, and Margaret was found guilty and punished for adultery. [1]
He married in New England, about 1636, Margaret ____, who died at Rehoboth 13 July 1664. [1]

"MARRIAGES: (1) By 1637 to Margaret _____.

On 6 June 1637, "John Hathaway Hathaway-236 being accused of adultery with Margaret Seale, wife of Edward Seale, James Penn & Samuell Coles testified that he confessed it to them; so the grand jury found the bill of indictment to be true. [3]

Rob[e]rt Allen & Margaret Seale, being accused of adultery, confessed the fact; so the grand jury found the bill of indictment to be true." [3]

On 19 September 1637, "Margaret Seale, the wife of [blank] Seale, confessed adultery, & was found guilty." [3]

On 12 March 1637/8, it is "ordered, that the 3 adulterers, John Hathaway, Rob[e]rt Allen, & Margaret Seale, shall be severly whipped, & banished, never to return again, upon pain of death." [3]

On 30 March 1638, "Edward Seale of Marblehead [was bound in] twenty pounds for his wife's appearance when she shall be called for after her delivery.")" [3]

On 6 June 1637, "Edward Seale, for his beastly drunkenness, was censured to be set in the bilboes till the end of the Court, & then to be severely whipped." (This was the same court at which Edward's wife was convicted of adultery.) [3]

MARRIAGES: (1) By 1637 to Margaret _____. (On 6 June 1637, "John Hathaway being accused of adultery with Margaret Seale, wife of Edward Seale, James Penn & Samuell Coles testified that he confessed it to them; so the grandjury found the bill of indictment to be true. 1640 Weymouth and Rehoboth

Moved to Weymouth by 1640, Rehoboth in 1643, & then back to Weymouth. Died before 6 October 1692 (date of inventory) in Weymouth Norfolk County Massachusetts, USA.] [2]

Second Marriage to Rebecca

Edward married secondly Rebecca _____. The "wife of Edward Sails" died at Rehoboth on 13 July 1664. (On 14 July 1664, at Rehoboth, a coroner's jury ruled that "Rebeckah Sale, the late wife of Edward Sale, was her own executioner, viz: she hanged herself in her own hired house."

1692 Death

Died before 6 October 1692 (date of inventory) in Weymouth Norfolk County Massachusetts, USA. [3]

Edward Sale or Savell or Searles, died iin Weymouth, Massachusetts, shortly before 13 April 1693, when the administration of his estate was granted to John Rogers [4]

Inventory had been taken 6 Oct 1692, and was presented by "John Roges" on 26 April 1694 [vide ibid.,403]. [5]

Children of Edward Sale, born in New England[1]

1. Ephraim Sale, bapt at Hingham in May 1638[1] Ephraim married first Alice FOSTER (ancestors of Tennessee WILLIAMS), and second Mary; [5][6] Legally, children born during a marriage are presumed to be the children of the father. However, the existence of court records regarding adultery between Margaret and two other men during this period would raise questions regarding Ephraim's biological paternity. He was baptized in May 1638, thus born probably in March or April, placing his conception at June or July of the previous year. It was during the time he was most likely conceived that his mother was accused of adultery, thus placing questions of Ephraim's paternity on the public record.
