About Edward Stebbins

1. Edward Stebbins, son of Lieut. Thomas and Hannah Wright, was born at Springfield, Mass. April 14, 1656 and died there Oct. 31, 1712. He married April 12, 1679, Sarah Graves.

2. Early in 1676 Edward Stebbins was taken captive by the Indians at Longmeadow and carried to the falls above Deerfield, with a youth named Gilbert, he made his escape and gave information of the residence of the Indians, which enabled the English to surprise them in an attack, killing 300 or more.

On Dec. 31,1678, he took the oath of Allegience, was twice made surveyor or "Tithingman" and several times, Selectman, also "packer".

BIOGRAPHY: "Edward Stebbins, early in the spring of 1676, was taken captive by the Indians at Longmeadow, while he was with Samuel Bliss, his brother-in-law; and was carried to the falls above Deerfield. With a youth named Gilbert, he made his escape from the Indians and gave information of their place of residence , whereupon the English made an attack on them, destroying three hundred or more of them" (New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 38, p. 158). In addition to his other town duties, Edward was chosen Selectman in 1700, 1702, 1703, 1707, and 1709. From all of these records, it's clear that Edward Stebbins was a prominent man in Springfield during his lifetime.
