NOTE death.date-39yrs
When Edward Braker arrived on the "Euphemus" at Geelong on July 18, 1853 he was 29 years old and his wife Mary was 25 years old. They had left Plymouth on the April 7, 1853. His trade was given as a carpenter from Devon and they came as assisted immigrants. Their first born child Elizabeth was born in 1854 at Collingwood, Melbourne. My grandfather Thomas was born in 1857, his brother Simon Braker was born 1859 but died 1860 and Albert (Uncle Kib) was born in 1861. They were all born at Tin Pot Gully, Sandhurst (now Bendigo). It follows that great grandfather Edward was chasing the gold but without success, which is probably why he took the family to NZ when gold was discovered at Gabriel's Gully in Otago. Gai and I spent three days in Melbourne searching the passenger departures from Melbourne to Port Chalmers and another day in Sydney searching departures from Sydney to New Zealand, but without success. At this stage we do not know how and when they arrived in New Zealand, except that we know they did not fly. Two more children, Arthur (Doidge family) and Mary (Wright family) were born in New Zealand. I remember as a small child meeting Aunt Mary Wright who lived in a cottage in Oxford.

In 1880, Edward Vincent is listed as a wheelwright and in an Oxford Census 1882 as a farmer. Living at Kaiapoi, he cut timber for the Waimakariri River Bridge and moved to Oxford when Granddad Vincent was 12 years old he died in 1900 aged 80 and his wife Mary died on August 19th 1920 aged 99 years.
