One of Lionel Winship/Lyonall Wynshopp of Welton Hall's younger sons sailed to America in 1634 and arrived at the port of Boston. He settled at Cambridge.

Arrived Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; Left England On the 8th or 10th August 1634 or 1635 On The Ship, Defense (or Defence or Defiance) which sailed from Harwich.

1638 Edward Winship bought a three-acre estate at the easterly corner of Brattle and Mason Streets and extending through the Cambridge Common

"Edward Winship, who stands at the head of the Winship family in America, was born in England in 1613. He embarked for America in the good ship, "The Ddfiance", at Harwich; England, August 10, 1635; arrived in Bostonm Nassachusetts, October 3, 1635 and two days later located in Cambridge, Mass. a suburb of Boston. In 1638 he purchased theland commenciung at the corner of Brqttle and Madson Streets, extending to the Commons, and he was for many hears one of the most active and energetic citixens of Cambridge. He was commissioned ensign of the Cambridge militia company in 1647, and lieutenant in 1660. He was elected deputy general of the court in the years 1663, 1664, 1681,1682,1683, 1684, 1685 and 1686.

Edward was commissioned ensign of the Cambridge Militia in 1657, and was a lieutenant in 1660. He was elected deputy from Cambridge to the General Court of Massachusetts in 1663, 1664, and from 1681 to 1686. He married (1)Jane Wilkinson, and their children were Joanna and Ephraim Winship. He later married (2)Elizabeth Parke, and their children were Elizabeth, Edward, Samuel, Joseph, Margaret and Marjory Winship.

Biography

Lieutenant Edward Winship was born in England March 13 1612 He sailed from Harwich, England in ship The Defence to Boston Massachusetts Bay Colony in August 1635 the name of the town being changed to Cambridge on May 2 1638 Edward Winship was one of the original owners of land within the present limits of Lexington He erected a saw mill on what was then denominated as Mill Brook on or near the site of the present fur factory. This was undoubtedly the first mill set up within the township He owned extensive tracts of land in Cambridge and the adjoining town of Lexington The greater part of his prosperity remained in the Winship family several generations He became a member of the military organization which was later the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston He was selectman of the town from 1637 to 1684 and representative in the general court of Massachusetts Bay Colony 1663 64 1681 86. He was an active member of the church in Cambridge was a lieutenant in the militia and his death occurred December 2 1688. He married Elizabeth Parks In his will dated 1685 among other bequests he gives to his son Samuel III Samuel Winship son of Lieutenant Edward and Elizabeth Parks Winship born October 24 1658 was a resident of Lexington all his life.

In 1638 he purchased the land commencing at the corner of Brattle and Mason streets, extending to the Commons. and he was for many years one of the moot active and energetic citizens of Cambridge. He was commissioned ensign of the Cambridge militia company in 1647, and lieutenant in 1660. He was elected deputy general of the court in the years 1663, 1664, 1681, 1682, 16%, 1684. 1685 and 1686. He was eelectman of Cambridge for fourteen yearn between 1537 and 1684, and held several other official positions. He died in Cambridge, December 2, 1788. His daughter was for many years a school teacher and the following odd epitaph appears upon her gravestone: “This good dame no longer school must keep, , Which given us cause or children's sake to weep.“"

He later married (2)Elizabeth Parke, and their children were Elizabeth, Edward, Samuel, Joseph, Margaret and Marjory Winship. Inscription: "Here lyes ye body of Lieut. Edward Winship, who died December the 2d 1688 & in the 76 year of his age."
