Eleanor Bailey

John Bailey was born in England about 1613. He was first a weaver, and subsquently a husbandman. He lived in Salsibury, where he afterwards lived, being one of the selectmen in 1664. He married Eleanor Emery about 1640; and was made a freeman in 1669. His wife was engaged in the practice of mid-wifery in 1669 and 1670. He died in March 1690-1; and she remained his widow, administration being granted on her estate Dec. 23, 1700. Children listed: Rebecca, John, Sarah, Joseph, James, JOshua, Iass, JOshua, Rachel and Judith."

Eleanor was born in 1624 in Romsey, Hampshire, England and was baptized there on 7 November 1624 as "Helena daughter of John Emmorie". Before 1641 when Eleanor was 17, she married John BAILEY, in Salisbury, Essex co., MA.

From the earliest days, the Emery family was part of the European colonization of Newbury. The name Emery is visible on a rendering of the owners of lands there in 1635. As a child, Eleanor surely lived right there on the shores of the body of water that Anglo-Americans have named the Parker River.
