Elfriede Loewenthal was born on 9 January 1895 as daughter of Juliane and Moses Loewenthal, both Jewish faith, in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The mother, Juliane Loewenthal born Feist was born on January 12, 1859 came from Bendorf (now Rhineland-Palatinate). Elfrida's father, the chief clerk Moses Loewenthal, born in 1853 in Lennep near Remscheid, died already in 1930. Elfriede Loewenthal's career began on Oberlyzeum in Oberhausen. The last freely chosen place of residence of Elfriede Loewenthal in Mülheim was Bahnstraße 44, where she lived with her mother and her sister Johanna Juliane together.
