FindAGrave.com Profile: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=17995358 Elijah Bohannan Harp, Sr. is buried at Shaddox Cemetery, E. Hwy 7, Newton, Arkansas. The stone marking the gravesite is marked only with Elijah B. Harp's name, birth and death date and the following: "Yet again we hope to meet thee When the day of life is fled, And in heaven with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tears are shed" Elijah Bohannon Harp, Sr. is buried at Shaddox Cemetery, E Highway 7, near Pruitt, AR. ADDITIONAL NOTES: "Information from Washington Monument history. 1850 Newton Co., AR, 31. 1860 Newton Co., AR, 959. He was killed on site of Dogpatch USA's general store. 1870 Newton Co., AR, census. Info from records of Doyle Harp. Info from Joyce Lindsey, Harrison, AR. Elijah and Martha came to Buffalo River Valley in 1844. In a book of Newton County, AR, Elijah Bohannon Harp, Sr., was shot twice in the doorway of his home by Dan Johnson and others. This is the reason for Martha Jane Tate being in the room beside her husband. Elijah Bohannon Harp died Feb. 23, 1864. Jasper M. Young and James Riggs, also a Mr. Anseny, a neighbour, mark the gravesite with only Elijah B. Harp's name. They were killed by bushwackers, men who were on one side, depending upon which side that they were on. There were many recollections as to where this killing took place, in front of Elijah's family in his own front yard. However, others say it was at a nearby cave where they shot them, loaded them on horses, brought and threw them on the ground. Wherever it was, it was a cruel, needless death. Charges were brought up later and a trial was held and the story goes that the judge said that he did not know of any man who deserved the killing that was done to him [Elijah], according to the old ways." He was the son of Solomon HARP and Sarah BOHANNON. He married Martha Jane TATE 3/9/1843 in Newton County, AR. This information was from a book on Newton County, ARK. Elijah Bohannon Harp was shot 2/23/1864 as he stood in the doorway of his home by Dan Johnson and others who were so called guerrillas during the war. There were other men killed at the home at the same time, names unknown, but they are all buried in a common grave with Elijah. Elijah Bohannon Harp died along with his sons-on-law Jasper M. Young and James Riggs, also a Mr. Anseny, a neighbor and maybe others. The stone marking the gravesite is marked only with Elijah B. Harp's name, birth and death date and the following: "Yet again we hope to meet thee When the day of life is fled, And in heaven with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tears are shed" They were all killed by bushwhackers, men who were on one side or the other during the Civil War, depending on which side suited them at the time for what they wanted. There were many recollections as to where this killing took place. Oue understanding was it was in front of Elijah's family in his own front yard. However, others say they came and took them away to a nearby cave where they shot them, loaded them on horses, brought them back to the home place and threw them on the ground. Wherever it was, it was a cruel needless thing and when the killer in charge died years later and a trial was held, the story goes that as the "not guilty" verdict was handed down, the judge said he did not know of any man who deserved the killing more than this killer. So justice was done, according to the old ways. Elijah Bohannon Harp Sr. was hung by a bushwacker named Dan Johnson, Dan accused Elijah of being an Abolistionist. Elijah denied the accusation, but Dan was set on killing him. (this is the story my father Elgin Harp Jr. told me) I'm sure you can piece together all the stories and find some truth in all of them.
