About Eliza Parkin
"The Lavinia and John Malpass family shared a crowded duplex with Jane and John Biggs on Chapel Street. Their daughter Eliza recalled,
Here they seldom allowed the central fireplace to go out, banking it with coal each night. There was usually a pot boiling over the fire. Water was carried in powder cans up the steep banks of the gully for her father's bath when he came home at night from the mine. The Spring at the ravine became a popular place for young people to meet, and several romances began when a boy offered to carry a girl's pail up the bank".
