About John Malpass

  • Baptismal Information - Listed in Nanaimo Archives.
  • Obituary Notice in Nanaimo Newspaper John Malpass had steadily labored at the different mines, which had operated at Nanaimo, Newcastle Island, and Wellington. He was a man who would not readily forgotten by those who formed his acquaintance. He manifested more pleasantry and wit than any of the other old timers. In 1857 when a start was made to drive levels from the bottom of the No. 3 shaft - which was only 84 feet deep - the men used to come to the surface for a little while to partake of breakfast and everyday without fail, Malpass would create a hearty laugh with some witty conception or a well humored banter. A man of kindly nature, and a most agreeable citizen. Funeral for Mr. Malpass took place from Wellington on Sunday afternoon and was numerously attended. Nearly all the pioneer residents were present to pay the last sad mark of respect to a fallen pioneer. The services were conducted by Rev. E. Robson of the Methodist Church.
