He married twice. He married first, Elizabeth Wells, July 9, 1647, in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. (10 N.E. 39)
Elizabeth was born say 1621. Elizabeth was the daughter of Isaac Wells. Elizabeth died March 17, 1661-62, in Eastham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, at 40 years of age. (Eastham Recs.; 7 Mayf. 16) He married second, Bethiah Linnell, 25 March 1664, in Eastham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. (Eastham Recs. ; MD 7:16) Bethiah was born (baptized) 7 February 1640/1, in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. (NEHGR 9:282 ; Mayflower Source Records by Gary Boyd Roberts:598) Bethiah was the daughter of Robert Linnell and Peninah Howes. Bethiah died 24 or 25 March 1726, in Harwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, at 85 years of age.(1) Harwich records record the death twice, on two separate pages, once as the 24th and again as the 25th. Henry probably emigrated from England, but neither the place of his birth nor the date of his arrival is known. The estimate for his year of birth is taken from the Ancestral File CD-ROM. The Cleveland Genealogy (see bibliography) states on p.1554 that family tradition in one branch of the family believed that five brothers came from England in early colonial days and settled respectively on Cape Cod, in Providence, R.I., Boston, Mass., Baltimore, Md., and that the other brother was captured on a vessel in one of the French wars, and taken to Canada. No evidence has been found to support any of these claims. The first mention of him in the Colonial records is as being among those in Plymouth between 16 and 60 years of age able to bear arms in August 1643. (8 Plym.Col. Recs, 188) Although he married in Barnstable he probably continued to live in Plymouth. Pope (p.23) says he moved to Barnstable, but this is probably wrong. Savage (1:73) says he was in Yarmouth in 1641, and this statement is repeated by Freeman (2:359) and by Rich (p.519).No authority appears for this statement (Hawes p.13). Pratt (p.28) states that he was in Eastham in 1651, but his son Samuel was born in Plymouth in 1652. Savage mentions a son Isaac, b. June 15, 1654, who died young, but no authority is found for this and it is probably foundedon a repetition on the Eastham records of the birth of Isaac in 1657 (Hawes). The Ancestral File CD-ROM includes this extra Isaac, as well as an extra daughter Desire b. 1655 in Sandwich. Pierce's Colonial Lists (p.18) mentions him as a grandjuryman from Eastham in 1653, but thePlymouth Colonial Records do not give the residence. Also in 1653 he was on a petit jury, and was propounded to take up his freedom. (3 Plym. Col. Recs, 31, 32; 7 N.E. 68) He was admitted a freeman June 6, 1654. (3 Plym. Col. Recs, 48). He moved to Eastham before May 12, 1655 when John Morton of Plymouth conveyed to Henry Atkins of Eastham his dwelling house, etc. in Eastham bought of Mr. John Major, Sr., sometime inhabitant of Eastham. (9 Mayf. 233) He is mentioned among the freemen of Eastham May 22, 1655. (2 Freeman 359; 6 N.E. 41) He was a constablethere in 1657 and 1659 (3 Plym. Col. Recs. 116 & 163), and surveyor of highways in 1674, 1675, and 1676. (5 Plym. Col. Recs. 146, 167, 197)He evidently remained in Eastham the rest of his life, probably dyingthere in 1700. His estate, which amounted to 118 pounds, 11 shillings, was inventoried on August 21, 1700, and his undated will, proved Oct. 3, 1700, gives one shilling to each of his children and the rest of his property to his wife Bethiah. (2 Barn. Prob. Recs. 113) [Also see 7 Mf. 238-9 for his family] Bethiah married second, Stephen Hopkins, April 7, 1701 (Eastham Recs; 7 Mayf. 16. [9 Mayf. 9 says April 9]) and moved to Harwich, where she died, having also survived her second husband.
