About Elizabeth Broughton, Convict "Pitt" 1792

Elizabeth Heathorn (alias Ann Glossop) arrived in the Pitt in February 1792 as a convict after being sentenced at Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, to transportation for seven years. She sailed back to England in October 1809 in the Boyd but when they stopped at the Bay of Islands in New Zealand for spars, she perished in a massacre by the native people of all on board except four, of whom her daughter Betsey was one. This child was brought back to New South Wales, where all the others grew up



Anne Glossop aka Elizabeth Heathorn, common law wife of William Broughton, mother of his six children came on the transport the Pitt in 1792 to serve a sentence of seven years.While travelling to England to see children there being educated there the ship stopped in NZ to take on spars to sell at the cape. She was massacred along with some seventy others and her baby boy. Her daughter, Betsy was rescued some three weeks later by Alexander Berry and eventually returned to the care of her father. Anne was sentenced at the Montgomery shire assizes for theft of cloth and maintained her innocence.

Murdered by Maoris in NZ, along with other passengers & crew of the ship "Boyd". The only survivors were a cabin boy, a woman and her baby and 2 year old Elizabeth Broughton. They were rescued by the ship's owner, Alexander Berry. AKA Ann Glassop
