Elizabeth was one of 13 children of Ephraim and Hannah Avery Brown. One brother and two sisters died at birth, so Elizabeth was raised with nine brothers and sisters: Samuel, John, Ephraim, Thomas, Hannah, Rebecca, Deborah, James and Grace, in Stonington, New London, Connecticut. She married John Browne in October of 1692 in Stonington. She gave birth to 11 children, five sons and six daughters, including John Brown.
