About Elizabeth Cabell

Named in her father's will.
Elizabeth Burks was born c.1705 in Henrico County, Virginia and died Sept. 21, 1756 at the family plantation in Albemarle, Virginia. She was the daughter of Samuel Burks and Mary Davis. She married William Cabell in Virginia in 1726. He was a captain in the Royal Navy and a trained surgeon. She was known to be a Quaker and helped maintain friendly relations with the Indians across the river Tye, near her home in Albemarle County. She died from a coma from “Bilious fever,” which was a liver disease that caused the vomiting of bile.

There seems to be some confusion as to the place of Elizabeth's death. Many sources show the place of death as Nelson County, Virginia. This simply cannot be. Nelson County was not formed until 1807. It was formed largely from land previously in Amherst County. Amherst County was formed in 1761 from the southern portion of Albemarle County, five years after Eliabeth's death. Therefore, Elizabeth died in Albemarle County, Virginia. She was buried in the William Cabell Cemetery on the grounds of the old Liberty Hall plantation.
