About Richard Burks
Richard Burks was born 1713 in Henrico County, Virginia and date/place of death not known.
Married Frances Houl, also known as Frances Horsley, step-daughter of Robert Horsley, in Virginia.
Frances was named in her step-father’s will as “daughter-in-law,” but that was the correct language back then. It meant that she was his daughter “by law,” and not by birth.
There were two children, sons Roland and William. His wife was 40 when they married, so a large family was not possible. His sons left home and headed in different directions, creating a "Northern" branch and a "Southern" branch of the Burks family.
Many sites show Richard with the middle initial "H." I have found no documents to support the use of this initial. It did not stand for Horsley, as the name did not come into use in the Burks family until after Richard's marriage. It is possibly a confusion between father Richard Burks and son Roland Horsley Burks.
Children of Richard Burks and Frances "Fanny" Houl:
- Roland Horsley Burks, born c.1740 in Albemarle County, Virginia, and died in Floyd County, Kentucky
- William R. Burks, born c. 1743 in Virginia, lived for a while in North Carolina, and died at an advanced age in Georgia.
