About Elizabeth “Hannah” Ellyson

Not the same as Elizabeth Guibert. More supporting evidence needed to position her as daughter of Dr. Thomas Gerard, Gent.. Dr. Thomas Gerrard did not mention a daughter, Elizabeth, in his will, nor did he name an Ellyson grandchild. Elizabeth Gerrard was named as a headright when Thomas took up land in Maryland, she was not named as a headright when he patented land in Virginia. A printed account of the Gerrard family lists the names of Dr. Gerrard's children: Justinian Gerrard, his eldest son, Thomas, Susanna, Anne, Frances, Temperance, Elizabeth, Jane, John and Mary Gerrard.

Robert Allison (Ellyson) was born about 1627/ 1635 in either Scotland or England. He died before Sept. 28, 1671 in New Kent County, Virginia. He married Hannah (Elizabeth) Gerard (b. 1627- 1632in Lancashire, England, d. Dec. 19, 1716 in either VA or St. Mary’s, MD), (perhaps) the daughter of Thomas Gerard and Susannah Snowe (more likely, an Earlier wife), in Maryland between 1640 and 1650 / say 1655. They had two children, Susannah “Hannah”, and Gerard Robert Ellyson I.

Elizabeth, wife of Robert Ellyson, was born about 1630 and died before 1671 in New Kent County, Virginia.

Not the same as Elizabeth Guibert

Married: Abt. 1640

Children

  1. Hannah ELLISON b: Abt. 1657 in VA
  2. Gerrard Robert ELLISON b: Abt. 1659 in VA

Notes

The name of Robert Ellyson's wife must have been Elizabeth, as Elizabeth Ellyson was one of the sponsors of William Randolph, the son of Henry Randolph, on Sept. 12, 1658. She was present at his baptism in James Citty, and there seems to have been no other Ellyson in James Citty at that time. There remains the possibility that Robert married a sister of Dr. Thomas Gerrard.

Do not confuse Elizabeth Gerard Ellyson (this profile), born c1627, with her half-sister Elizabeth Gerard Blakiston Rymer Guibert, who was really born closer to c1645 and married Blakiston in 1669. The two Elizabeths married different men. This Elizabeth married Robert Ellyson (born c1620), the other Elizabeth married Blakiston. One Elizabeth Gerard came to MD in 1650 and is listed as a daughter of Thomas Gerard. She appears to be the same Elizabeth who married Dr. Robert Ellyson about 1655. Since Dr. Gerard would be more likely to name his older children first in the immigration record then the Elizabeth named in 1650 is more likely the older Elizabeth who married Ellyson as proven before 1658. The other Elizabeth Gerard seems to have arrived in MD in 1659. Her father is not specified in the immigration record likely because she did not come with him because he was already in MD. I believe her father was also Thomas Gerard, though not proven.

From "The Ellyson family of Virginia"

  • John Ellyson, born c 1585 in Windyedge, Avondale, Lanark, Scotland, died between 1649 and 1669 in New Kent Co. VA. Emigrated on the Prosperous in 1623, living at Archer's Hope, James City Co. 1625. Married Ellin Hamilton, born c 1585, daughter of Minister Sir Robt Hamilton, arrived on the Charity. Perhaps the parents of:
    • Major Robert Ellyson, born 1615. Married Hannah Gerrard, daughter of Samuel, not Sir Thomas.
      • Hannah Ellyson, born c 1654, will proved 19 December 1728, married Lt. Colonel Anthony Armistead, issue
      • Gerrard Robert Ellyson, born c 1657, married Anne Myhill

notes

There is considerable confusion as to whom Robert Ellyson married. The LDS Ancestral File indicates he married Susanna Gerrard. However, as explained in her notes, it is quite apparent that she married Robert Slye.

Tidewater Virginia Families, by Virginia Lee Hutchenson Davis further contributes to this confusion. That text says: There does not appear to be any conclusive evidence as to whom Robert Ellyson married. Most of the printed accounts state that it is generally assumed that he married Elizabeth, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Gerrard. However, Dr.

Gerrard's children: Justinian (the oldest), Thomas, Susanna, Anne, Frances, Temperance, Elizabeth, Jane, John, and Mary (see Governor Garrard of Kentucky, 1962, pp. 184-185). However, the William and Mary College Quarterly - Washington and his Neighbors does not include an Elizabeth.

Maryland and Virginia Colonials by Sharon J. Doliante, indicates the wife was Elizabeth ____ who until recently was thought to be Elizabeth Soanes, daughter of Henry (Speaker of the House of Burgesses, in 1660). However, this Elizabeth now appears to have married John Peterson, of Charles City Co.

For now, I will assume that either Susanna or Elizabeth Gerrard is the wife of Robert Ellyson. This is simply based on the fact that Robert's first male child is named Gerrard Ellyson and the naming convention of the time would indicate he was named after the maternal grandfather

July 2015: Dr Ellyson's wife could not have been Susannah Gerard, she was married to Robert Slye.

Sara Spence died in 1627 as a child, she cannot have been the wife of Robert Ellyson.

Thomas Allison (1639-1680) is DNA proven to be of a different line.
