Biography

ELIZABETH “BETSY” BELEW, daughter of Zachariah Belew and Mary Bullington; born 14 December 1787, Union District, South Carolina;[1] died 1866, Barren County, Kentucky; she may have been buried in Mill Creek Church Cemetery.[2] She married (1) JOHN SPRINGER; mother of Jesse and Ruth Springer and probably another son and another daughter; married (2) 7 January 1816, Barren County, Kentucky, JOSEPH GIST; mother of Belew, Merinda, and James Monroe Gist (born 3 July 1826); marriage bond 3 January [surety: John O. Morrison]; mentioned in settlement for John Springer, Barren County, Kentucky, not dated [1816]; in 1850 she was living in her daughter Merinda (Gist) Eubanks’s household in Monroe County. She was perhaps the Elizabeth Springer, received by letter, who became a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church, in November 1813.[3] According to Vaughn she received a widow’s pension in 1853; had a Springer son in 1808 and a Springer daughter in 1810;[4] the last assumption is based on the fact that a young boy and a young girl in those age ranges were listed in Joseph Gist’s household in 1820—none of Joseph’s children by his first marriage were living with him, and they were much older than the pair who are believed to be children of Joseph’s wife by her first marriage. So two children of John (III) Springer and Elizabeth Belew. This girl is the right age to be Matilda Springer, while the boy might be the young John Springer who appeared later in Monroe County.

CHILDREN

Children of John, Jr., and Elizabeth (Belew) SPRINGER:[11]

RESEARCH NOTE ON THE CHILDREN

Stan Garner in “The Garner Connection” (2007) lists the children of John Springer, Jr. and Elizabeth Belew as Jesse, Ruth, John (b. ca. 1810, Ky.), Susannah (b. ca. 1814, Ky; m. James Harlan on 23 Oct. 1834, Wayne Co., Ind.), and Thomas Springer (b. ca. 1815, Ky.; m. 1 May 1839, Wayne Co., Ind., Polly Ann Thompson). I checked marriages of Wayne County and found neither of these marriages in that county—and I didn’t find them anywhere else either. I located James and Susannah Harlan on the census for Wayne County, Indiana, and they were clearly not settlers from Kentucky. Sears-5927 16:19, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

  • i. JESSE SPRINGER, b. Union District, S.C., 1804/5; m. SARAH HARLAN.

NOTES ON JOSEPH GIST

JOSEPH GIST, born 27 August 1751,[12] Lunenburg County, Virginia; died 31 August 1844, Monroe County, Kentucky; buried Mill Creek Church [Old Mulkey] Cemetery; son of Benjamin Gist and Mary ______ [Jarrett or Wright]. He married (1) 25 January 1773, Union County, South Carolina, HANNAH BREED, born 1755, died 14 May 1815, Barren County, Kentucky, daughter of Joseph and Priscilla (Avery) Breed. Joseph married (2) 7 January 1816, Barren County, Kentucky, ELIZABETH “BETSY” (BELEW) SPRINGER, widow of John Springer, Jr. Their marriage bond was dated 3 January with John O. Morrison acting as surety.

Joseph and Hannah “moved from the Fairforest Creek settlement in present Union County, South Carolina, in 1776 with his parents, Benjamin and Mary (Jarrett) Gist, to Washington County, North Carolina, where, in 1777, he enlisted, serving as an Indian spy in the regiment commanded by Col. John Sevier;” his military career continued with several “different enlistments until 1780 under Col. Sevier, Majors Jesse Walton and Jonathan Tipton, and Capt. James Stinson (his brother-in-law).[13] tax list 1778: Washington Co., Tenn. [Benjamin Gist was also on the list].

In 1783 when Greene County was organized from Washington County, the home of the Gists was in the new county.[14] On 23 August 1784 Joseph Gist was a delegate from Greene County to a convention to consider forming a new state, to be called Franklin, organized from Washington, Sullivan, and Greene Counties.[15]

“Joseph Gist owned several tracts of land in Greene County, North Carolina (now Tennessee), some of which he sold in 1795 and 1796.”[16] About 1801 he and his family moved to Barren County, Kentucky, rejoining Hannah’s sister, Priscilla (Breed) Howard, and her brothers, Avery and Nathan Breed. Their names appear on the membership list of the Mill Creek Baptist Church in 1801.[17] At the July Court 1801 in Barren County, Kentucky, Thomas Gist, Joseph Gist, and Nathan Breed were ordered to view the nearest and best way for a road from the state line near Capt. Gist’s to near Thomas Flippen’s, and report to the court.[18] tax lists of Barren County, 1800-14; mentioned in settlement of John Springer in Barren County [1816]; In 1819 Joseph Gist was appointed an executor of the will of his brother-in-law, Avery Breed.”[19]

Joseph Gist was an uncle of Levi Gist, father of the Gist women who married two sons of Matilda (Springer) Morrow. If Joseph Gist was Matilda’s stepfather these interconnections would be reasonable.
