  • Died 31 Aug 1844 at age 93 in Monroe County, Kentucky, USA

(William) Joseph Gist, born 27 Aug 1751 in or near Lunenburg, Virginia, was a son of Mary (Jarrett) Gist (1732-1810) and Benjamin Gist (abt.1730-1810). 'William' may have been his first name, but probably he preferred to be called Joseph; see research notes below.

On 25 Jan 1771 he married Hannah Breed in Union County, South Carolina. Joseph and Hannah had children:

  • Sarah (Gist) Hardin (1773-1858); married David Hardin
  • William B. Gist (1775-); married Mary Wood
  • Mary (Gist) Harrison (1777-1840); married Jesse Harrison
  • Christopher Gist (1779-bef.1850); married Elizabeth Wood
  • Amy (Gist) Hardin (abt.1782-abt.1857); married John Hardin
  • Priscilla (Gist) Mercer (1785-aft.1860); married Howard Mercer
  • Joseph Breed Gist (1789-1835); married 1) Mary Thompson; 2) Sally Means
  • Anna (Gist) Harlan (1791-1872); married Elihu Harlan
Hannah (Breed) Gist died 14 May 1815 in Barren County, Kentucky, USA.

In 1777 and 1778, Joseph Gist volunteered as an Indian spy under Col. John Sevier, County of Green, Territory of the U.S. south of the Ohio River [1].

Joseph Gist married his 2nd wife Elizabeth (Belew) Springer, a widow on 7 Jan 1816 [2]. Joseph and Elizabeth had children:

  • Belew Gist (1818-1896); married Nancy C. Davis
  • Marinda (Gist) Eubank (1824-1858)
  • (Unnamed son) Gist

In the U.S. Census of 1820, Joseph was enumerated in Monroe, Kentucky.[3]

Joseph Gist passed away in 1844 and is buried in Mulkey Church Cemetery near Tompkinsville, Kentucky, where a monument has been erected by the D.A.R

Research Notes

At the time of Joseph's death and his military burial the records have him listed as Joseph, not William. The Census records used for William are spelled William Guest not Gist, whereas the Joseph in the Census of 1820 in Monroe, Kentucky is spelled Joseph Gist. This poses to be questionable for a given first name William.
