About Elizabeth Herrick

Biography Elizabeth Dodge was the daughter of Capt. William Dodge and most likely Mary (Conant) Balch, widow of John Balch. She was born 16 October 1673 in Essex County, Massachusetts.[1] On 28 October 1696, Elizabeth married Jonathan Herrick in Beverly.[2] Elizabeth and Jonathan had, at least, six children. On 13 March 1711/1712, Elizabeth passed away in Beverly.[3][4]

Children of Elizabeth Dodge and Jonathan Herrick Elizabeth (Herrick) Wheeler (1697-1764) married Edward Wheeler (1698-1765) William Herrick (1699-????) Hannah Herrick (1700-1732) married Deacon Abraham Patch (1701-1763) Rebekah Herrick (1702-????) Jonathan Herrick (1706-bef 1715) Lydia Herrick (1709-1777) married Jonathan Patch (1708-1771) Elizabeth Dodge source conflicts Vital records of Beverly have an Elizabeth Dodge born 13 April 1670 daughter of William and Elizabeth Haskall.[5] Subsequently there is an Elizabeth Dodge born to William, 3rd, and Elizabeth, baptized 23:2m:1676 C.R.1. Following this entry is an Elizabeth Dodge born to William, 3rd baptized 29 May 1698. If these entries are accurate, most likely the 1676 Elizabeth passed away before Elizabeth, 1698 who would be too young to be our Elizabeth Dodge. In Josephs Thompson Dodge's works, his 1892 New England Historical Genealogical Society Register article[6] and his subsequent book in 1894[7] he does deconflict the various Williams in Beverly during that period. In his 1892 article, pages 384-385 appear to be the most clear distinction between Capt. William and "Coker" William. In this he clearly states "Coker" William was the spouse of Elizabeth "Hascoll", daughter of Roger "Hascoll". It further discusses land transactions between Coker William and Joseph Herrick. In his 1794 book he provides a good account of Capt. William in Volume 1 page 20. He then discusses "Coker" William, son of Michael, on page 28, still indicating that he married Elizabeth Haskell, his daughter Elizabeth was born 13 April 1670 which matches vital records of Beverly. Notable Issues: 1. Joshua, Hannah and Sarah are the only children found under Beverly Vital Records for William Jr. and Mary. The only comparable child is Mary where you find between William Jr and William the Mary's have different birth or baptism dates. So the Elizabeth on page 107 of Beverly vital records is Coker-Williams vs Capt. Williams 2. Is it a marriage or death date for Elizabeth in Joseph Thompson Dodge's 1894 book, V1 page 33. Seems obvious that it is a death date, but . . . So, if it is a death date, it seems the two Elizabeth's died on the same day. See pages 20 and 28. In the1846 book by Gen Jedediah Herrick, Herrick Genealogy: A Genealogical Register of the Name and Family of Herrick from the Settlement of Henerie Hericke, in Salem, Massachusetts, 1629 to 1846, with a Concise Notice of their English Ancestry, addresses Elizabeth Dodge and only her father, William.[8] In William Richard Cutter's 1908 book, Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, Volume 3, on pages 1474-1475, he basically dismisses the name Elizabeth Haskell, and appears to mix up William, Sr., a.k.a. Farmer William and William, Jr., a.k.a. Capt. William.[9] Capt William Dodges Will dated 1696 and proved in 1720, clearly establishes that it was his daughter that married Jonathan Herrick by his order to his son William: "William to pay Jonathan Herrick __ pounds in pay which makes up his wife’s portion I promised on marriage . . . is all I intend . . ."[10] Sources ↑ Dodge, Joseph Thompson, b. 1823, Genealogy of the Dodge family of Essex County, Mass. 1629-1894, Democrat Printing Company, Madison, Wis., 1894, v1, 20, https://archive.org/details/genealogyofdodge011894dodg ↑ Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850 (Online Database: NewEnglandAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2008), Beverly Marriages, Pg. 157. https://archive.org/stream/vitalrecordsbev01masgoog#page/n159/mode/2up. ↑ Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850 (Online Database: NewEnglandAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2008), Beverly Deaths, pg. 469, https://archive.org/stream/vitalrecordsbev01masgoog#page/n471/mode/2up . ↑ Dodge, Joseph Thompson, b. 1823, Genealogy of the Dodge family of Essex County, Mass. 1629-1894, Democrat Printing Company, Madison, Wis., 1894, v1, 33, https://archive.org/details/genealogyofdodge011894dodg. ↑ Vital records of Beverly, Massachusetts, to the end of the year 1849, The Topsfield Historical Society, Topsfield, Mass., 1914, 107, http://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Beverly/Images/Beverly_B107.shtml . ↑ The New England Historical and Genealogical Register.
