Elizabeth "Eliza" Monroe

Elizabeth Jones (1730–1774) was the daughter of James Jones & Hester Davis.

She married in 1752 to Spence Monroe (1727–1774), son of Andrew Monroe & Christian Tyler. He was a moderately prosperous planter who also learned the carpentry trade.

They had four children live to maturity:

1. Elizabeth Monroe Buckner - b 1754. of Caroline County, Virginia. Married William Buckner.
2. James Monroe - was born on April 28, 1758, in a wooded area of Westmoreland County, Virginia. The site is marked and is one mile from what is known today as Monroe Hall, Virginia. Married Elizabeth Kortright.
3. Spence Monroe, Jr. - b 1759. Died at age 1.
4. Andrew Monroe - d 1836. of Albemarle County, Virginia. Married Ann Bell.
5. Joseph Jones Monroe - b 1764. clerk of the District Court of Northumberland County, Virginia; private secretary to President Monroe; later settled in Missouri. Married 1) Elizabeth Kerr 2) Sarah Gordon 3) Elizabeth Glasscock

From James Monroe 5th President, 1817-1825

Elizabeth (Jones) Monroe was of Welsh heritage and an educated woman for her times. Her father James was an architect and her brother Joseph a judge. Joseph Jones later played an integral part in the lives of Elizabeth's children. ...  Monroe's life changed forever when his father died early in 1774, orphaning the five children. According to Spence Monroe's will, James and his brother Andrew shared ownership of the farm after their father's death. Records indicate that they sold the property in October of 1783. Elizabeth's brother, Judge Joseph Jones, took over the care and education of the Monroe children when Spence died. Jones, a well-respected Virginia attorney, immediately encouraged James to enter the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, the second oldest college in the colonies.
